Hi, I've been having a white coating on the tongue pretty much every morning ever since a girl at my school bit me hard (but the bite was over a shirt), and I had to take antibiotics.

I was very worried that I had HIV but I took 2 tests since (one test was a month after the incident and the other was 9 months after), both came back negative.

What she did give me was HSV1, the common herpes simplex virus which causes painful coldsores under my lip every few months.

Could the white tongue be caused by the antiobiotics? can it be caused by herpes?

also, I had a bad habit of almost never brushing as a kid... could that be it?

by the way, the coating doesn't bleed or anything, it easily comes off with a gentle brushing of the tongue. It usually appears overnight.

Also, I have long stopped taking antibiotics and the coating is still present.

And it is not thrush, it never appeared ANYWHERE besides my tongue.
If anything, I think its plaque. but I'm not 100%.

A coated tongue could simply mean a poor diet; talk to an endocrinologist or nutritionist. The fact that it isn't painful, comes off with brushing and appears overnight would support this.

Here's an even better idea: go to your doctor!!

If it is Thrush, and it sounds like it is, that can be a very strong and nagging affliction. At it's worst it will clog your throat and cause you tremendous pain when you swallow. That yellowish/white coating you are getting will increase exponetially if it isn't treated. It's easily curable and not life-threatening, but it totally sucks to have it. Before it gets worse, get to your doctor and show it to him (so don't brush it off in the morning) and let him take care of you.

Good Luck!

Stop relying on the no brain answers that you get from here and go to the doctor. I am sure it is just plaque or like the other girl said thrush, but find out for sure.

I can also be something as simple as mild dehydration. Especially with antiobiotics you have to drink plenty of water and fluids,, try that but if not you might want to call your dentist or dr and see if there's anything they suggest.

it is caused by the antibiotics--it is called thrush or candida(yeast) do a search on the internet because there is a wealth of information out there. you should be taking a probiotic supplement and eating yogurt.

its the meds...i was on a medicine after a surgery that i had, it actually turned my tounge and mouth dark green! it was nasty and freaked me out at first...no worries, it will go away when you stop taking the meds, but if it worries you that much, call you doc and just ask.

Call your doc. Tell her you have thrush. Get Nystatin swish and swallow. Do NOT eat yogurt.
