We tried to catch the cats, but i don't want to capture her if she's pregnant because she might go into early labor or something. I also don't want the chance of some kittens dying. What do I do?!? My neighbor...who is a retired verternarian...said that we should stop feeding the cats because they'll just stick around and breed. I don't want to take them to the shelter because if they're acting mean or don't get adopted they'll pet them down. They are very social around me,but anyone else in the family the are skiddish around. HELP!!!

I am sorry you are in such a riddle.

In your place, I would carefully catch the cat, not stressing her, and adopt her for real (and the current kitten, if I can afford it) - meaning, take her to the vet, give her shots, have the vet check if she's pregnant, if not, or after she has given birth, spay her... possibly find homes for the kittens.

If you would not like that much responsibility... I think your neighbour is likely to be right. At least, if you keep the cat and kitten there, make sure they are fixed. Or in a very little bit you're going to be looking after a lot more cats. I know it sounds, at first hearing, cruel to fix a cat, but the health benefits are great, and stopping the birht of homeless cats is also a great bonus which I think you'll appreciate when you think about it.

Hi,

I didn't see your previous question. However, I think it might be something about feral cats.

If you want them to come around and they are friendly with you then continue feeding them. You need to have patience and in time some of them will start to like other members of your family. It may take a year or more before other family members can touch them. (I'm assuming that they let you touch them.)

I know this first hand, because I moved from a place that had a lot of dogs to a place that has a lot of cats and being the animal lover that I am, I'm now learning about cats. I have at least 1, but sometimes more feral cats as friends.

It is sweet that you care for this cat so much:)
You can catch her without causing undue stress, just be gentle with her.
Also try calling a "no-kill" shelter, they will not put the cat down. Just because she is skittish doesn't mean she won't ever warm up to others. She has just happened to pick you at this point to trust:) If you decide to keep her she will warm up to the rest of your family at some point, it just might take time. You can always keep her and give the kittens to a shelter when they are older. They will be adopted in a heartbeat. Just make sure you get her spayed ASAP...after she has the kittens, of course.
Good luck!

If they're feral cats, check to see if there's a trap-and-release program in your area. They'll use humane live traps to catch the cats, take them in to be spayed and neutered, then release them again. Some may be able to be adopted after being socialized, some may be put down due to disease, and any pregnant cats would be kept to ensure that their kittens were properly socialized.

Believe me, don't leave them out there. I know you might feel bad about some of them possibly being put down, but it's far better than what's happening now....and what WILL happen if they're allowed to stay intact and breed like rabbits.
