Okay I had it so hopefully I can help. Perthes disease is manifested as a hole in the hip joint, have included a link but haven't read it through. This is the low down, I am now 37 and have not suffered with this in over 25 Years so that's some good news it can cure itself, Other treatments at the time included a plastic hip but my mum wouldn't let them and I believe this to be the best option, take the treatments don't wimp out let him heal. Here's the hard bit It hurts like hell for a very long time, I was on traction for many weeks and confined to a wheelchair and then crutches for many years. I had lumber punctures to see how the disease was going and my mum can still hear the screams. You will need to be strong. Treatment is likely to be better these days but I was at the time somewhat a pioneer (thanks mum) Artificial hips can only be replaced up to 4 times at if you start young your going to get to that by the 30's im guessing so after 30 hello wheelchair again, for the rest of you life. As it is now I could have joined the army (i passed the special medical because of the disease) but chose not too so on that basis I am fit well. Good luck be brave your son will just get on with it anyway

Hi - my daugher was diagnosed with perthes age 3 in her right hip. She is now age 9. The earlier the onset of the disease the better the prognosis.
How are you all coping?

My son was diagnosed with it at age 4. They put him in a brace, but after awhile, we quit using it (it didn't seem to help, and it made his life miserable). Also, the doctors didn't agree on how/when to use the brace (one doctor told us he should wear it all day, the other said he should just wear it at night). Anyway, my son is 20 now, and he is fine so far, no problems with his hips. It is possible he will have hip problems when he is older. Good luck with your son.
