When I was in beauty college we saw this a lot. Many elderly women would come in for roller sets and get a wash out rinse put in their hair called "Fanciful Rinse", I believe you can buy it in the drug stores too. Since elderly people usually have grey or white hair that has no pigment the rinse reacts differently to their hair then it would to hair that still has pigment in it. Continually applying a rinse like that will stain the hair causing it to look purple or blue. Also, there are special shapoos you can buy for grey hair. The shampoo is blue and is designed to help remove the yellow stains that can appear in grey hair from smoking or medications.
I hope that this helped solve the mystery. I hope it wasn't too detailed for you!

I think that style is a bit outdated. Older women tend to be more fashionable today, so you tend to see less of the blue/purple tints, although still lots of perms, but I guess that is because it gives volume. HTH.

Good question! Gray hair can yellow badly, the rinses counteract this ugly color. Why women think that blue hair is attractive is beyond me...except for Marge Simpson and it looks good on her! lol...

This a very interesting question, Melissa, something I've been pondering over for years. I wonder if it's because blue or purple lasts longer?

maybe for the same reasons so many teenagers have hot pink or magenta tinted hair (on purpose). Guess they all think it looks good on them.

There are colors that don't give the expected result when applied on thin white hair...
I don't think they do it on purpose... at least not all of them!

I dunno, I guess they're trying to find the fountain of youth. All I know is that it doesn't work because my mom tried to highlight her hair with the remaining highlighting cream and she had blond and gray hair. It didn't look good.
