I'm looking for a statistic from a reliable source. "At any given time, there are X consumers shopping for a car (intend to buy within 30 days) in the United States." This could be derived from other statistics - for example, how many cars sold in any year combined with population, combined with some assumption around how long consumers shop for a car.

You could check the Statistical Abstract of the United States under Banking and Finance section....Or check the Federal Reserve Release under consumer data... Those are usually the most updated source of information related to consumer spending trends and purchasing demographics...If all else fails contact your local library.

Woah, you are tackling a very big spectrum. Has anyone really have the resource to carry out that kind of research? I think you need to be more specific when tackling the question. You need to look at if you are asking for a national average, or by state, cities etc. Within those categories you have to look at demographics such as income, gender and so forth. Each car is made for different target market, maybe by defining which car category (sedan, sports, SUV, etc.) you could also narrow the information you need. Good luck on your research.

Well I knew what I wanted, and shopped 8 car dealerships until I found it, at the right price with low mileage to boot.
