I mean, if they really don't believe in a "higher power" or if they don't want to believe, why wouldn't they be hanging out in another part of yahoo answers?

They are just trying to get a laugh by getting a rise out of the uptight religious people. Guess what, they often do get that laugh too. The real question is. What does a person of Faith (You) have against an atheist in the religion area? Your question seems as if you lack faith! No offense or anything. Seems to me that the best place for an atheist to be for a religious person is here really. Perhaps they may recognize something and change their views. I believe in a Higher Power myself.

I think most of you are dreadfully wrong. While I can't speak for all atheist, just the ones like-minded to myself, we don't seek religious discussions for the reasons above. There were a few atheists that answered this question, but allow me to chime in with my $.02.

1. We don't have to prove there is no higher power, we merely ask that if you are going to claim something factual, you back it up. There is NO physical evidence that there is a higher power. Miracles can be dismissed as coincidence. I've seen a few of these so called miracles, and they are anything but. If you were running around in the scientific community with a theory, but had absolutely no hard evidence to support it, but claimed no one could disprove it, it would be just that, a theory.

2. The guy who said we are here to provoke arguments: Yes, I think a lot of the atheists are a bit drama queenish, and like to get in these debates. However I have met quite a few that do it just to see how ludicrous the theists' arguments get. You'd be surprised how many people misquote the bible in debates.

3. Most atheists have study more than just one religion in detail. I have gone through most of the bible, and translated some of the original Latin texts (good luck finding these BTW, I wish I still had my copies). I also looked into Buddhism, Scientology, and Judaism (not seriously mind you, just to learn). Religion has some of the best stories IMO. Where else can you find people dismissing what should be their messiah, a fat guy with millions of followers, and entire Bodies of water yielding to an individual? It doesn't get much better than that. I think there are many life and moral lessons that could be learned from the bible, but everyone has different morals they believe to be right. In a perfect world, everyone would read up on all the available choices and make an informed decision about what type of person they want to be, but this isn't a perfect world.

As for me, I don't hang out in the spiritual category, I saw this via the main page of yahoo answers. I don't go around trying to convert, frustrate, or provoke. I seek the truth, and the day Jesus/Buddha/Xenu/Elvis comes down to tell me I'm not doing things right, I'll change. Until then though, I'll have to go on being a good person who donates to charities on a regular basis, helps people when necessary and not, and is kind and courteous to every human.

For the record I don't agree it's right for Atheists to go into your discussions and provoke you and be rude (if that's what they're doing). If they want to take part in your conversations they should be polite about it. You are humans just as much as they are.

They have opinions about religion and spirituality. Just like you do, and they have the right to be here.

Note also that some atheists consider themselves spiritual. Some don't. Some do.

I also would point out that many christians here often mistakenly assume that any non-christian is an atheist. I can't tell you how many times I've been called an atheist here. But I'm agnostic.

Last thought: I think it's even more amusing how many theists are threatened by the presence of atheists.

One last thought:
I am a regular participant on the news discussion boards, specifically the SCIENCE news boards. Christians constantly go there to attack science.
They don't believe in science... why go to the science boards???

Thus, I consider your comment hypocritical

Well as title of group is religion and spirituality it is not religion only.

I could ask why so many theists hang out in the politics room.

Besides most atheists I know like the mental exercise by debating religion which by its very definition is impossible to prove hence both are equally correct as far as we know which makes it ideal for a good debate topic.

Also atheists don't have to BLINDLY follow anything so sometimes they like to check if they see anything that will change their opinon. Too bad theists are slaves to brainwashing and incapable of moral and decent thought by refusing to question and seek answers

What I find really funny is that not one atheist I know or have seen in this room has ever asked why religious people come anywhere in an attempt to make religious people stay away....really obeying the precepts of the "higher power" aren't you?

I am Atheist and I got a great laugh from your question. LOL it is a clever point. iIhere because the rest of the categories get boring sometimes. ( I only visit about 6 of them). I like to challenge my beliefs sometimes.

I have learned alot from religion from my childhood, like do unto others ..., and thou shall not kill, ( I reserve self defense though). I practice these and other moral aspects that I beleive in.

Oh and BTW, notice I said I visit other categories too. I don't hang out here. But I do think I see your point. many people angry with religion come here to argue, debate, and provoke.

Ah well. I get angry myself sometimes. But it is because we are polar opposites in our beleifs. That is bound to cause tension. But I try to be a friend to humanity and therefore I can't stay angry for long. Like I can't stay angry with my family.

We will always disagree. But I respect those who can agree to disagree. Not force their opinion/belief on me or others.

Good day!

Well...I am an atheist, yet I have a tiny bit of hope. I read the questions and answers hoping a light bulb will go off in my head (and I will see/understand what everyone else sees.) I am not one of the trash talking atheists either. So that is why I hang around in here. You posed a good question.

:S

I come here because I like debating, I like seeing how people stand by their beliefs and GENERALLY I appreciate it a lot. (However don't get me started on some of the exreme ones spewing out about how they've found Jesus and why havn't I accepted him - you know who I'm talking about)

Because we are atheists and we "hang out" here doesn't make a difference - I can ask why you don't spread your wings and go spread the word of Jesus to other categories - If you have to spread the "good news" why do it here where there are so many followers?!?!

Plus you religious people wouldn't have much else to do but try to make us see your ways

I would think it is funny if it wasn't so sad!

It nags at them that they don't have the answers we do. When I have shown them 5 proofs of Gods existence based on scientific laws and principles they ask questions like who created God or that he had a beginning.

You would think their reasoning would make them realize that the VAST MAJORITY (over 90%) of humans believe in a Creator that has made creatures and creation can't be wrong. I have read that there are sociological reasons for bringing them to disbelieve. I prefer this argument for their "unique" thinking than that of infinite ignorance.

I don't like the sarcastic ones, but I hope that those that are in this spiritual category, will be touched by the Spirit of God,cause it seems that they are searching for a higher power, and the reasons for & why so many of us believe, and know God IS NOT A fairytale.

But, I think that most atheists are very spiritual people. Is that not true?

Y!A may want to consider dividing the category some, so that people can come in and discuss stuff with people who see things their way, without everyone harassing everyone else.
Ya know?
