Hi Laurie...a healthy adult cat on average consumes about 8 ounces/day*. If a cat drinks about a little more than a full cup this is still fine as well if the cat feels warm due to seasonal temperatures or an outdoor active lifestyle. Dry food may also contribute to a higher intake of water. More than a few cups at one sitting would constitute problems either as a result of diabetes, urinary tract infection, or chronic renal failure more common to senior cats http://www.felinecrf.com/. If you feel your cat is drinking excessive amounts of water, please contact your vet immediately as he could be seriously dehydrated.
*Cat Claws.com: Cats need about a cup of water (8 fluid ounces) per 8 to 10 pounds of body weight. If your cat eats only dry food, you need to be watchful of his fluid intake because his only source of liquid is the water bowl. (Cats who eat canned food get some liquid from their moist meals.) Drinking adequate amounts of water is very helpful in preventing urine crystals, constipation, and hairballs. If you want to promote more water intake, then try putting a few extra water bowls in different places in the house. Keep in mind that domestic cats originated in hot, dry climates (think Egypt and the Middle East), and it isn’t in their nature to take in great quantities of water. Just monitor your cat for any drastic increase or decrease in water consumption; any sudden, dramatic changes are a sign that you need to consult your vet

Ten isn't very old for a cat, just mature. One of mine gets so nauseous when he's on amoxicillian that he refuses to eat or drink--it's possible the antibiotic your cat is on may be making him feel worse because of that. Does your vet have an alternative antibiotic that isn't as nausea inducing? Keep up with the feeding. You didn't say if the vet thought he was dehydrated (if he didn't give fluids, he must not have been). Try enticing the cat with a jar of meat baby food, they usually love the chicken or beef, and it's only 75 to 98 cents to try that. If his nose is stuffed, he may not recognize that what you have IS food. Cats get weird about that. Get at least 2 tablespoons of food into him each day, even if it takes 3 or 4 tries to get it all in. He does need to keep something in his stomach. Offer him some baked chicken torn into tiny pieces too, sometimes chicken will perk up an appetite. Did the vet do a blood test? Check for soreness and 'guarding' of tender spots? Palpitate the stomach? Is the cat's third eyelid up? Is he throwing up any froth, or have diahrrea?

It depends on what he eats.
Cats evolved as desert predators and they have a poorly developed thirst drive. In the wild, in their natural environment, they get almost all or all of their moisture from their prey.
Wet food has about the same water content as fresh-killed prey. If he eats canned or pouch food, your cat may not need to drink much, if at all. My Rusty was with me his whole adult life and I never once saw him drink. My Scamper has been with me five months now and I still haven't seen him drink.
Dry food, as the term implies, has very little water content. If your cat eats dry food, he should drink a lot. But due to that poorly developed thirst drive, however much he drinks, it probably won't be enough to maintain proper water balance and in his golden years you will probably find that he'll develop chronic renal failure.
If you never heard that from your kitty's vet, that's because vet schools don't teach much about nutrition, and virtually nothing about the unique nutritional needs of cats, which are quite different from those of any other species.
Read here for more information about this:
http://www.catinfo.org
Also, regardless of how much or how little kitty has drank in the past, if he's started drinking more than usual, suspect incipient renal failure and get him to a vet for some bloodwork. Chronic renal insufficiency can often be managed fairly well once you know what you're dealing with.

Normally cats only drink as much water as they need. Cats are not like horses and some dogs. In which they will drink all they water they are giving no matter how much it is. I have had cats all my life. I have never worried about any of them drink too much. Some days my current cat drinks very little. While on other days she drinks like a fish. It all depends on their activity level.

I think it depends on the kind of food you're feeding him. I have read that an adult cat needed about 8 fl. oz (240 ml) of water a day, but a cat will probably drink a lot less, as cats usually take most of their water with their food. If you feed him canned food, he may need only a tiny bit water more.
(My cat drinks the same amount of water on all-dry and all-canned food diets - it really startled me; I realized I must have dehydrated him; have been feeding him canned food since)

I always thought my cats were healthy because they were drinking a ton of water. Turns out they all had urinary tract infections and my boy had crystals in his urine. I switched their diet from dry food to a lean canned formula and add water to it before I give it to them, and now I hardly ever see them drink.

Fresh, clean water should always be available to your cat. If he is drinking more than usual, you may want to take a trip to the vet, it could be diabetic, or have kidney issues.
