My sweet cat Shadow has suddenly started hissing at me. I don't know why- we get along great. It happens when i pick her up and then put her down... and right after she hisses she will let me pet her...is this another version of her talking?

She may be in pain for some reason. You should take her to the vet for a check up.

It could be so many things...but I agree with everyone else...you need to get the cat to a vet ASAP!! There is a reason the cat is hissing. I would assume the cat hasn't suddenly just stopped liking you. It could be a simple as the cat suddenly not liking being picked up.
BUT it could also be a medical condition or pregnancy.
Get her checked out!

Okay, I know alot about cats, as I have so many and study them, do you have any male cats around or does she go outside or have any access to male cats, because if she isn't old , even if she is she might be pregnant, my females whenever they are pregnant they will either his or growl when I pick them up, or yourt may not like being picked up becuse she is getting old or maybe she had a bad experience. If she is gaining weight and her stomach is getting hard and nipples are starting to fill up and get full then she is probably pregnant. If she is fixed then she just doesn't like to be picked up or is gettting old.

She may be injured or have a furball. Sometimes picking up a cat who has a furball causes discomfort for them. You might consider letting her eat some grass so she can get rid of it, if that's the problem. If that doesn't help, consider taking her to a vet to find out if she has an injury of some sort.

Yes, take her to your vet asap....
My adorable 6 year old male bit my hand only once... one month before he died from an urinal infection....
It was his way of telling me that he was hurting...
Your female only hisses at you..., but it means the same...
She is hurting somewhere....
Go see your vet... don't wait....
