My dog always yawns, but he is almost always sleeping, how can he be tired? Does your dog do this?

Yawning can signal sleepiness but it's almost always the bodies way of opening up the airways and filling the lungs up and subsequently our blood with air/oxygen. When you sleep or are tired, you breath more shallowly and sometimes the body needs more oxygen in the blood so the response is a big ole yawn :)The infusion of oxygen helps wake us and our dogs up when we yawn:)

Yawning can also be a sign of stress or uncertainty in dogs. Both my dogs will yawn (and make a squeaky whiney noise at the same time) if they're excited, or don't know what's going on, are confused or worried. Licking of lips is also a sign of stress or uncertainty (it's a gesture in the dog world used to show another dog that you're submissive and are no threat).

Yes...mine are lazy, too. They yawn really big...it's funny. But I think yawning just means a lack of oxygen. Of course, in a dog it can mean they are nervous as well.

My dog yawns when he stretches after getting up from a nap. Yawning doesn't always mean you're tired though.

She yawns for two reasons (like all animals)...
!. she is tired or
2. she is showing her teeth (slight aggressive warning)
