I know someone who eats 800 calories or less everyday, and has done so for almost a year...but she is sometimes actually gaining weight, rarely losing any, even with exercise. How can that be if all obese people "eat too much?" 800 calories is not very much at all. Oh, and the foods aren't junk food...so don't say she gets her fat from junk food. She doesn't have a thyroid problem (that has been detected by a doctor.) Okay, now I'm ready to hear from the ones who answer "fat" questions with "Eat less, you pig!"

Her mother is quite large...and has Cushing's. The woman herself has managed to stay below 200 though. She does have PCOS and hypoglycemia (the one skinny people usually have, not overweight people.) You all have come up with some pretty good ideas, or reaffirmed that she should see an endocrinologist after all.

She does have asthma and allergies too. She lost the weight gained from Prednisone though.

She doesn't have junk food in her house. She won't even let someone buy her a muffin at an informal job interview, she's that worried about it.

Lipid panel is good. Quite good, actually. And she's not a smoker or drinker. She's had this stuff checked out, and the only thing left now is endocrinologist.

They probably have an endocrine disorder and should get it checked out. Also limiting calories can make your metabolism slower and then they body holds on to the calories.

I would recommend they get checked out by an endocrinologist. They could have a thyroid or other endocrine related disorder.

I know obese and overweight people who do not eat all the time and have this disorder so I do not think all overweight people have a problem with overeating - they don't, some do.

Also she should get checked out for insulin resistance and PCOS, they can make it VERY hard to lose weight when they are not treated.

I would send her off to her GP and ask for a referral to an endocrynologist or if she cant afford a specialist at least ask her GP for tests for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) I have this and straight dieting does not work - with this you can have normal blood sugar levels but high insulin levels amongst other things - has she tried to have any babies? Does she have her period monthly? If not this could be another sign of it (there are many signs and symptoms of PCOS but not every person has every sign and symptom) an endocrynologist can do a heap of tests that will find this out for her. Of course there are many other problems that would cause weight problems.. eg.. is she asthmatic? If so is she taking puffers or medication with steroids in them? This can cause weight gain - if she has had her thyroid function test done in the past and it was clear - how long ago was this? Maybe she should get it retested just to make sure there is nothing wrong there... anyway just a few suggestions for her - OH if she has got PCOS the best diet to follow is a diabetic diet - I have followed many low callorie diets in the past and they just dont work for me... good luck to your friend :)

It could be hereditary. May be far back in her family if no one else has the same problem. I don't know the age, but many people ar enow having the same problem. I think it is form eating fast foods in your earlier years(anyone) and some people ar emore subseceptasable to obeseity than others, All of the meats today ar eraised fast and cheap using steroids, asnd otehr fast growth foods which when passed on to the humans are making a world of big women and men.
An example if holland. Two decades ago the average dutch man was 5 ft 6 and woman 5 fr 2 . to day they are the average tallest nation on earth with the men averaging 6 ft 1: and the aver age dutch woman is now 5 ft 8 ''. It's from milk they drink from cows which are fed to produce huge qualities of their product wihtout regard to health hazzads to humans. All so they have an excellent health policy aids in their growth and health over all. but it's the animal feed which leads to so much obesity.

This is one on the problems overweight people have to deal with. Something causes them to gain weight even when they do nothing that should cause them to gain weight. I have several friend who eat a lot less then I do and do not cheat and still gain weight even with a good exercise program. As the first person that answered your question suggested, see an endocrinologist, they are specialist in fighting this disorder.

One of the problems with your friend is that she's not eating enough and her body is storing what she's eating as fat in an attempt to survive. If she would raise her calories to 1200+ per day and start moving, even walking then she would start to lose weight. The average sedentary person needs 1200 minimum a day in order for the body to function properly. It's just that she's not getting enough calories and may even be nutrient deficient in certain areas, most likely protein. That's where most people's problem is. I would recommend to up calories, start walking at least and eventually increase the intensity, and add a daily multi vitamin.

Two things you want to consider as problems: Toxicity and Autoimmunity (or both)

#1 Toxicity. You mentioned black lines in your gums. This is a classic presentation for lead toxicity. This would also explain problems with finger nails (though a thyroid problem would do the same. Many think exposure is limited to paint used before 1978, but lead is still being used in many different things (just look at all the toy recall...very sad).
This can be diagnosed by blood, hair and/or stool analysis.

#2. Autoimmune means that your body's immune system is attacking itself, in your case the thyroid gland.
It does this by recognizing certain protein strands and tagging it with antibodies. Then your body sends out it seek and destroy immune mediators to kill off the tagged protein structures. Usually this is how your body defends itself from viruses, bacteria, fungi, ect. There is a problem with your tagging system that has caused your body to attack itself. This is usually diagnosed by testing for antibodies in blood work, as well as clinical symptoms.

How does this happen? There is no one pin pointed cause. The most popular reason is because of some break down in your filtering system. You normally keep bad things out through things like your skin, gut lining etc. If there is a problem with your gut, things get through that shouldn't, your body recognizes it as foreign, tags it and destroys it. Sometimes the protein structures of the things that get through look like the protein structures that make up certain cells in your body. That is why you see some of the other post saying that this autoimmune disorder is related to other autoimmune disorders (diabetes, lupus, RA, etc). It is really a problem with your filter, not your thyroid (or at least primarily the problem). Treating the thyroid might help somewhat, but it will not address the problem (in my example, the gut lining (filter) being disrupted).

Fat is actually an essential part of a healthy diet - as long as it is used sparingly, that is. It has been proven that people with entirely fat-free diets, when fat is reintroduced to their diets, lose weight. Also, eating less can lower metabolism. I believe the someone you know is an example. Because no ordinary human can survive off of 800 calories alone, his/her metabolism has slowed down so that he/she burns only 800 in a day. Therefore if he/she switches back to a normal healthy diet, he/she will gain weight - at least until his/her metabolism has time to get back to speed.

Well anyone who'd answer a question like that is an ***hole.I often answer questions on proper diet posted by people who claim to be obese and dieting.The fact is there are other factors besides hypothyroidism such as types 1 and 2 diabetes.These hormones should have been screened as well as her thyroid levels but problems with insulin are sometimes intermittent therefore may not show up properly in the tests.The caloric intake is certainly very low so even the healthy foods she consumes may have a negative effect.Cutting back on carbohydrates has been shown to be safe and very effective in weight loss because of insulin activity.Anyone who answers questions as you've pointed out should be reported but the fact is Yahoo! rarely addresses these reports of abuse.I usually counter them by clicking on their name and answering questions better then they do and having my answer chosen as best by the asker.

There are a few obese people who are that way because of a glandular disorder.

However, they are the exception. Most are that way because they simply eat too much and exercise too little. They also lie like a dog about how much they eat. Chances are if you see an obese person who says they only eat 800 calories a day, you're talking to a liar who has twinkies and snickers hidden all over the house.

If you buy into their lies, you are what's called an enabler. You validate and allow them to continue with a lifestyle that is literally killing them. Have you ever seen this women at the gym or out running? Does she get out of breath walking down the hall?

Stop enabling her behavior, don't make her feel good about something that is going to kill her.
