Antidepressant and anti-psychotic weight gain is no longer a mystery. It is a fact, it does happen; it has not been your imagination. You are not the only one having this happen to them.

If you are like most people fighting weight gain, you haveprobably tried several diets or several methods to lose the weight.

Antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Cymbalta and Lexapro do cause rapid weight gain.

Anti-psychotics, such as Zyprexa and Risperdal do as well.

Why does this happen?

Statistics show once weight gain begins while taking these medications it usually does not stop. It is not odd to receive feedback from people that have gained 40 to 60 pounds in a short period of time.

Antidepressants can cause weight loss in some individuals at first but after about 3 weeks the trend reverses and weight gain begins.

There is a hormone called Leptin that is now shown to be altered with antidepressant use. Leptin inhibits appetite as well as regulates fats in our body.Antidepressants do cause leptin to not work properly.

There are clinical trials showing the use of antidepressants and anti-psychotics and the relationship of Leptin and weight gain. "These studies suggest that the fat-cell derived hormone Leptin might play an important role. Leptin signals to the brain the size of the adipose tissue and is probably the most important peripheral signal for the long-term regulation of weight." Source: Neurol Psychiatry

Omega 3, lecithin and CLA will regulate Leptin. Regulating Leptin is crucial if you are going to lose weight.

I never gained any weight when i was taking my zoloft-200 miligrams a day. But, when I started on zyprexa, I started gaining immediately. I gained so much weight in 3 months, the doctor had to change my meds. I begged him not to because the zyprexa worked so good for me. It kept me in reality. But, he did it anyways. switched to abilify and the weight gain stopped and I'm doing well on it too. Unfortunately the weight don't just fall off. I had to go and get the lapband surgery to lose weight. Which, by the way, is working extremely well. But please, don't stop taking your meds just because of weight gain. You can always find a way to lose it.

Some people gain and some people lose.
Mirtazapine cause weight gain in most of the people. One of my friend gained weight while taking Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Escitalopram (Lexapro).
I think it is not predictable.
