the idea here is to use an alphabetical letter to represent a word or term. If you take off the W in writeable, you will be left with Riteable. Now pronouncing the two words, seems to give you the same sound. So this is in my opinion the reason for the use of R for writeable since the design came about at the same time. So it sounds more appropriate using the term RW for re-writeable and R for (W)Riteable.
