Fasting fights disease of the body and the soul. It is an ancient remedy for almost every disease because it give the body a chance to focus on elimination of disease. Normally most of our energy goes towards processing food and distributing and seperating vitamins, minerals and waste.

Fasting helps you be closer to God, because you never hear that you should only fast for spiritual reasons...it is fasting and prayer that go hand in hand. So the combination these and focus of your energy goes straight towards your physical and spiritual betterment.

I don't believe that God prefers people to be hungry. On several occasions Jesus brought people back to life and one of the first th ings He did if not the first was ask someone to bring food. He knew that peoples bodies need food to function and He tended to the basic needs. On the other hand I think there is a place for fasting at times when constant prayer is sought but I do think it is overused.

You got your question of hungry and fasting wrongly placed!
When one fast, one is performing one's obligation to one's
religion which demands it. However, the person who is fasting
may not be hungry. He has his time to eat during the night, after
he has fasted during the day.
In Islam, during the fasting month of "ramadan", true muslim believers must perform their obligatory duty towards Allah for spiritual fulfillment. Thus, they will come closer to Allah in their prayers.

No God prefers to tell us how it feels to be hungry so we can realize what poor people feel like and try to feed the poor

Fasting allows for focus and is actually very healthy if done on a regular basis--bodily nourishment does not have to come on a regular schedule oddly enough.

You're asking the wrong question. You should be asking why we allow people to go hungry when it's well within our power to put an end to it.

Fasting is denying oneself in order to bring oneself closer to God. It is not starving oneself.

The hunger makes you hallucinate, in turn allowing you to see God and other things that are not there.
