Golf is a sport that is designed to be played by all levels.

If you are good then you do not need any extra shots to get around a course, if you are just learning to play then there is a handicap system which means that you can have up to 36 shots extra to get around the course ( for ladies, men the maximum is 28 )
There is a great social side to golf as well, I do not mean hanging around with fuddy duddys in dark dingy wood pannelled rooms where the average age is 119 !. There are some good people there from totally diverse backgrounds, there is no class system involved either, it comes down to how good a golfer you are.

It is a very competetive game, however if you do not like to compete then maybe this is not the sport for you. however if you get the "bug" as such and join your local club and start playing frequently then you will then learn all about pressure. In a competetive golf match you will need to learn who to concentrate for anything up to 5 hours at a time.

It is one of the few sports where you do get out of it exactly what you put into it. If you want to play a couple of times a year then you do not really have to do much, however if you want to be good then you need to put the hours in and practice.

If you want the point of it - go to your local driving range and try it !

Golf is a self challenge in most cases. As a golfer I can tell you as frustrating and mentally painful as the game is its as equally or more relaxing, visually satisfying and fun to interact with friends. Some of the most beautiful scenes are on the golf course.

Thats a good question(im being sarcastic). No, golf like bowling is a "retired" man's haven. Golf and bowling can be entertaining and yes they are sports. Does it take an "athlete" to play these types of games; No. Does it take some degree of skill and talent;Yes. I don't mind golf, bowling, darts, and etc..... being ranked up there with basketball, football, and hockey as sports. Its just that one genre of sports caters to athletic ability and another genre doesnt. So don't give me that "an athlete is an athlete" because thats not the case.Phil Mickelson is not an athlete, (sorry I know its a heartbreaker). And that obese guy you see throwing darts on espn2 is not an athlete either(sorry once again).

Golf doesn't have a point. Darts have a point. Decimals have a point. Fingers can point but don't have one. If you mean purpose rather than point then I would suggest that the purpose of Golf is the same as any other sport. To enable individuals to use physical ability to attain a goal (that is goal as in objective not football!!)

Well, it is like any other sport. Golf was probably invented as a money-making device and progressed into such. But unfortunately it is run by politics - just like any othe rmoney-making venture. Look at Tiger Woods and the rookie at the championships this year. Woods won - as I predicted and it was most likely a set-up. So to answer your question simply - money. Money is the point of golf.

Its one of the oldest sports in the world. Its actually very beautiful because your opponent is nature - the landscape, weather etc. It may seem pointless to put a ball in a cup, but every sport is pointless if you take that perspective.
Basketball-put a ball in a goal/rim more times than your opponent
Soccer-same thing but use only your feet
Hockey-same thing but use a stick
Lacrosse-same thing
Football-pass a goaline more times than your opponent

the point of golf is to remind people that some sports can only be played by people with money and the short answer, to get the white ball in the whole.
