I think there are two points here - cooking and eating. Lots of people can cook, but most people eat rubbish. The difference between The UK and other European countries is that in the UK there is a huge divide between the working classes and the middle classes. Unlike Spain, for example, where you will see the average worker eating fresh local produce. In the UK, the working class generally eat pre-packed, processed (frozen) rubbish - if you disagree then go to your local Tesco's.
One major factor in our eating habits was the advent of the industrial revolution, which saw the migration of people from the countryside to the towns and cities. This was responsible for huge demographic changes, as well as a loss of our agricultural base (unlike France) and the immediate need for large supplies of cheap food.
However, all is not lost. Wonderful British food is available - but you have to pay for it. My parents live in Herefordshire and if you go to towns near where they live like Kington or Ludlow - you can buy superb local meat, seasonal fruit and veg. Most people wouldn't pay for this quality of meat as its so expensive.
To conclude, we can cook but most people don't know how to eat!

What a load of rubbish!!!!!!!!
Britain is the number one country in the world for diverse dishes. All of the worlds cuisine can be found here, unfortunately also that of the Americans.
It has to be said that for a number of years the diet was poor, mainly due to low incomes and a tendency to follow the U.S.A.
Many housewives use too many ready cooked foods that lack real flavour, the flavour is all artificial.
Since MEN have started to show an interest in proper food things have changed a great deal. Now even home cooking is on a par with the continent, and leaves the U.S. far behind.
Many of the Spanish in our village here in Spain come to eat at our house and they don't need to be asked twice.
We swap recipes, even for curries.
So get off of your high horse and get some real food in your mouth, might just shut you up.

I think I'm a pretty good cook, but working class cookery has historically been poor - we're sorting it out now with all our celebrity chefs and our local cuisine obsession. It mainly comes from the fact that we didn't have much in the way of spices or garlic to cook with, plus our fresh green veg was limited to summertime as root vegetables were only available in winter. We could only preserve things in salt for many years - before fridges, so they became tasteless! In hot countries the choice is greater for a longer period of the year, and they have a greater selection of herbs and spices. Ta daa!

Perhaps you should ask Delia Smith, Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Anthony Warrell Thompson, Rick Stein, Gary Rhodes, Brian turner or any other of the well know succesful British chefs!
On a domestic front, I think the British as a rule do enjoy cooking and I personally have had very few poor British meals

From traveling all over the world, sampling cuisine from lots of different countries I can tell you that the only problem with British cooking is meat. No one can ruin a slab of beef like a Brit. I don't know for a fact but it just seemed like they didn't put any seasoning on it.
The rest of the stuff was excellent, I had lots of good food in England, just never had a decent piece of beef.

Some English people cannot cook, but then I bet you that there is at least 1 person in every race that cannot cook. I am English and can cook, not like a fine dining meal but I can certainly cook decent enough food to feed my friends and family.

Been in England and some food was good and some was not so good. For the most part, I enjoyed it. One thing is for sure, the ingredients were pretty fresh across the board. It was quite different from what we get here in the states identified as "British" food. So much more than fish and chips.

The food in the UK is fantastic now, we have so many different types and styles of food, the reason being is that we have so many bloody foreigners and they bring their cuisine with them!
We even have German restaurants, not that many people go as the food is crap in germany, as everyone knows! lol :-)

You should NEVER use the words "British" and "Cuisine" in the same sentence unless there is an "is not" in between.
