I normally use the "selection" tool. Under its options you can choose different shapes for the selection box, including rounded corners, ovals, and circles. Select the part of the picture with the rounded corner selection, copy, and paste to a new picture. You can also feather the selection to give you some fade out at the edge. Looks really nice.
