If you purchase a car from a private party (vs. a dealer), the party probably takes the tags off right after the car is sold. How do you drive it back home then without tags? Moreover, is there a way you can add insurance to the car before you take it out of the seller's garage?

You do the paperwork first, then you drive the car. To get insurance, you call your agent. What's so hard about that??

In some states, the tags stay with the car. In others, they stay with the owner. Doesn't really matter. You take care of the paperwork first and then drive it home.

It depends on the state you live in. In Ky you leave the tags on the car as they are issued to the car and not the person. In Virginia the tags are issued to the person so they stay with them for their next vehicle. In either case you are expected to transfer the vehicle into your name prior to driving it from the seller's residence as he is liable for any accident you might have until it is legally transferred into your name. In Ky you have 5 days from the purchase date to transfer a vehicle and after that you will be fined $50 for failure to transfer. If you have an accident the fine increases to $500. I know it doesn't sound fair but it is an effort by the state to reduce the number of people driving without insurance and it actually works well,

In Massachusetts you have to register the car first. If you have all the paper work ie. Title filled out, your old registration ,plates and a bill of sale you have ten days to complete the registration.
