I have had my dog for a year and a half now. She is really sweet, and loves other animals. I decided yesterday to get a kitten. She is the runt of the group, so she is small, but 7 weeks. So far she has hissed and boxed at my dog when she has come near. I can tell she is curious about the dog, but not sure yet what to do. Is there anything that I can do to merge the two together. I really want them to get along, especially since I want my dog to finally have a friend. Any suggestions?

the dog is a strange animal to her with a different smell then she is use too. not a mama smell. What I had to do was rub my hands on my dog, especially on his face in the wiskers areas, where scent glands are. Then I would put my hands near my kitty and scritch her chin and face so she could smell the dog on me. Then I would rub her face and touch the dog on his face. The scents mingle together. It worked for my kitty, but it took awhile. Just remember, she is the runt, and her world is eye level unless she is looking up. At eye level for her, she would see her brothers and sisters and mama. Now she sees 2 long stick looking things, (your legs) and 4 hairy long hairy things, ( your dogs legs) and neither one of them smell like family. She feels so out of place right now. Give her time and she will come around. Just make sure your dog does not snap or bite at her, and try to limit his barking, because that will scare her. My kitty came around in about 2 weeks. My sisters kitty and dog got along fair, but still had bouts of hissing and growling....but other times they would sleep together. Most of it depends on your kittys disposition. Just show love to BOTH. And pet dog after petting kitty so doggie don't get jealous.

My daughter had an English Springer for many years & now has 2 pugs. She also has had from 2-5 cats at a time over the years. That Springer loved all the cats. She even tried to nurse them...after they were grown. They loved her right back and would curl up & sleep with her, share food water dishes with her. Your kittens Momma may have "told her" that dogs & cats don't get along. I have a cat who has always been afraid of dogs & will not have anything to do with them, even my Mom's chihuahua. They tolerate each other being in the same house but don't associate. My kitty taught her kittens not to trust dogs either. . Try to not force it. They should be allowed to move at their own rate. Never allow your dog to chase the kitten, that would traumatize her. If she is curious about the dog let her make the first move. You might try holding the kitten in your lap & petting your dog at the same time so they both know they don't have to compete for your affection. I think it will happen that they do become friends.

I've had both a cat and a dog for years. The best I can tell you is don't expect them to be the best of friends. In all of my pets, it was more like a sibling relationship. They were like brother and sister. They tolerated each other and often taunted each other but they never were great friends. It can happen though, so don't give up hope.

My best frien has a female cat and a male bichon frise 9 years older.... Not best friends, but when they play... the dog will run after the cat, but the cat knows that the moment she turns around and she runs after the dog ... the dog runs away scared... and she'll walk like a boxer ...high back... knowing that she wins.... So funny to see... and they both know it's just for play....
They'll find their way....

Eventually, they will get used to each other. I have cats and dogs and they adjusted on their own, without my help. It's a shame the population of the world can't follow this example.

You're going to have to give her time. Even if she doesn't become best buddies with your dog, she will at least learn to tolerate her.
