In October we're going to Shanghai for a wedding, our first time in China. Our chinese friends are quite wealthy, what could be a good present for them?

I am a Chinese living in Hong Kong but I guess the practice is not very different in Shanghai.

Whenever I am invited to a wedding banquet, I would bring a gift certificate issued by a department store or better still, one that issued by a bank which can be encashed by the couple. This is what we call 人情 (personal favour) and we more or less see it as the "admittance fee" to the banquet. Now I simply write a cheque and put it in a wedding card or a nice money holder.

This amount will be given at a reception desk manned by relatives or friends coming from the groom side and the bride side. If you know just the groom or the bride, you need to mention by which side you are invited, they shall then receive your "admittance fees" and ask you to sign on the guest book and advise you of your table no.

As to the amount of the "admittance fees", I usually try to guess the cost of the dinner per table and divide it by 12 and then cover a bit more to make the amount sounds an auspicious number, one that ends with the no. 8. For example, if the dinner per table costs US1,440, I shall start from US$120, and then add US$8 or US$18 to make a sum of US$128 or US$138. Avoid the unwelcome number 4 though.

It seems ridiculous and crazy but this is the way we go about wedding banquet.

Of course, you can always top up with a personal gift and my habit is to give the admittance fee at the reception and then present the gift directly to the couple when I see them. The gift can be anything you think is special to them. But personally, I shall stay away from photo albums, bed sheets etc which the couple must have received a lot.

I would choose something to represent the united states. Perhaps a reproduction statue of liberty, an eagle statue or something along those lines. Traditionally, guests hand the bride money in a red envelope which symbolizes love and joy. So perhaps you could pick up a little something to represent American celebration of a wedding (picture frame, etc) and present the traditional gift as well. Enjoy the wedding! Take lots of pictures! This will be an event you'll remember forever!

You don't have to give money.... Pick a gift.... The average gift is around 50$ I got married last july and we got anything from 20$ to 700$ the majority of gifts that were money were 50$ but just give what you can and no one will care. It is just the excitement of the day. Your Boyfriend is already doing a BIG thing by being the best man and in reality the groom should be giving him a gift and may give him a gift. but anything from 40-50$ is appropriate. But if you can't do that then what ever you can give is fine.

MONEY- it's the international gift that everyone likes :)

Find out from the parents for someone if their is something they want from the USA or Europe or where every you a from that they would like and can't get there. It's funny but another person I know bought as Waterford Crystal to Taiwan because they can't get it there. My ex boyfriend family was obessed with the store BeBe because they don't have it in Thailand and we use to buy gifts there all the time!!

mostly chinese people likes something that would related to "wealth" for example... "8" mean "prosperity in chinese. the pronunciation rather similar*

i would suggest some Tradisional Medicine? like "Ginseng" ? or sort of thing like that. mostly people like it. or u can try "WINE" , something like Ya-mi-Shu.

* just my personal opinion and suggestion

In my country, cash is very much appreciated. Otherwise, perhaps a nice teaset, or carvings.
