Our four legged friends are still basically wolves. So they still have wolf like tendancies. The greatest enemy of a hunting pack is the wind and their scent. Wolves and domestic dogs roll in the droppings of herbivours ( like horses, cows, sheep, and goats) so as to mask their own smell. If they smell like the poo of their prey they are less likely to scare what they are hunting away if the wind direction changes.
For this reason you will never see a dog rolling in another dogs poo.

To make themselves smell more interesting to other dogs!! both my dogs roll in duck poo if they can get to it quick enough. i also read that wolves done it back in the day to bring a new smell home for the pack to smell.
