one of my cats likes to sharpen his nails on the carpet, even though i have provided scratching posts (of wood, of rope, of cardboard, of carpet... pheeewww). Everytime i catch him at it - or just beginning to do it on the carpet, I spray airfresher in the air a few feet from him and he stops. But he goes back to doing it when i am not alert... am afraid he'll ruin brand new carpet and i will have to fork out loads of money to replace it when i move out! Help! Somebody? Serious answers only please... i love my cat and he's good anywise - just this peculiar perk.

Hi there again...consider using Citronella spray...the odour is quite unpleasant.

Double-sided sticky tape is another option. Cats dislike getting stuck to the tape. Be sure to leave it there for a brief time as he will try to make a few more attempts believing maybe it was just that one time. Eventually, he will learn that one area is no longer pleasant.

When you can catch him clawing inappropriately move him to where his kitty scratching posts are located and then offer him a food treat. He will learn to associate that he is only rewarded for using the posts rather than the carpet as well. This take a little more time and patience, but it does work surprisingly well. Keep little jars of the treats near the posts so it's easier for you to dispense the treats quickly too.

Cat Scratching Carpet

Well, we solved our problem by going to Wal*Mart and getting one of those floor-to-ceiling scratching posts treated with catnip and setting it up and taking the cat to the post and taking hold of one of her paws and scratching on the post with it to show her that was what she was to use instead of our floor or furniture. If she tried to use anything else, I'd tap her behind and say NO in a stern voice and then repeat the top step til she got the idea. You can also get additional catnip from PetSMart called Kookamunga. Our cat loves it over any other brand we'd tried. I hope this helps!!

Maybe a throwover rug where the cat is more prone to doing it my cats are still young and do have a go at the carpet and the furniture still I have to keep reminding them not to do it I think it is a matter of time and a lot of patience in the long run I think that they will learn not to do it

it DOES ruin the carpet. i have two 8 month olds and whenever they scratch, we stop them but we have to shut them out of the bedroom or they keep us awake, so when we're asleep they claw the carpets. and the carpets are ruined now. they have scratch postys, tons of toys, and we spray them with a water bottle when they do something wrong... but they still ruined the carpets.

A water bottle always worked the best for me as well. A throw rug may also protect the area if it is one certain area that he prefers. I also find that trimming their nails (with nail clippers) helps lesser the amount of damage they do when scratching and also helps alleviate them getting stuck on stuff or hurting you on accident.

As far as getting them declawed I find it horrible. All these people that say it doesn't hurt? Have they had their fingers severed at the first knuckle? I'll bet not. How can that not hurt?

not sure about spraying him with airfreshener. a water bottle would be better. have you tried double sticky tape if there are only certain areas. have you tried putting a scratch post where he likes to scratch. when you catch him in the act pick him up and take him to the scratch post and show him how to use it.

Do not listen to these idiots that are telling you to get your cat declawed, it is agony for the cat, and illegal in many countries, so what does that tell you about the practise? Do not declaw your cat, read about what they do, you cat will be walking about on raw stumps, and then have to try and use the litter tray with open wounds. Those people that tell you to declaw are cruel, they should not be allowed to keep pets at all, read up on the subject yourself and see what I mean, rather re-home your cat than de-claw it. They should make this illegal all over the world, it is one of the most inhumane things you can do.

peel an orange and rub the zest into the areas on the carpet where the cat scratches - cats don't like citrus - so that should work - sorry about your carpets :(
