just like the opulent, bloated old women they minister to, struggling to catch the eye of a world that sees them as decrepid, they have little to do other than lavish money on their outward appearance

Many of the churches in this country were built some time ago now and are in need of regular repair and maintenance. To ensure the fabric of the building is maintained. Some more modern churches also have regular work because they followed a trends in 60's architecture Which has left them with all sorts of roofing problems which either need constant repair or a totally new roof fitting.

Like me, they're old and need mending.
The usual reason is that they need redecoration. A few years ago, the painter would have happily painted the gutters from a ladder, but now Heath & Safety rules mean we've got to have rigid scaffolding with safety netting and fixed stairs. It might not look so good, but at least we don't have all those splattered painters around the bottom of the wall.

Pollution. It's eating away at the stone. Everytime you see a church or cathedral surrounded by scaffolding think on this thing, despair and die. Or consider how you can help to improve the environment.

Paying less in rates?! Do you know how much it would cast to rent that amount of scaffolding!?
I think they are old buildings and need repairs, but I don't know why so many at once. Maybe you just notice them more than ones without scaffolding.
And yes, it looks terrible! But we don't need somewhere that looks good to worship God!

No, they're not falling down but need necessary repairs. If you don't like the scaffolding, perhaps you can teach builders the art of levitation.

They aren't falling down. They need work doing on them and it takes alot of slow painstaking time and effort. Dont worry they will be returned to their former glory.
