Suicide is not a snap decision most of the time. Only in life wiping situations do you really see snap suicides. Such as the guy in a stand off with the police who shoots himself as an act of desperation and or remorse. The person who off's thier own family is an example of extreme remorse.
Many suicides/attempts are the result of severe mental illness. Schitzophenics who think the bugs got into thier brain and just want the bugs to stop. Bipolar people who get so severely and chronically depressed that they just want to end it. Especially in frustration at thier own inability to control thier illness.
Chronic pain is a common cause of suicide. The migraine that just wont stop. Days and days of excruciating pain. The back pain that goes on for years and years without release or hope of getting better are some examples. They just want the pain to stop.
Severe loss and other short term but acute bouts of depression are another frequent cause of suicide/attempts. Loss of job, spouse, housing and possiessions in a short span of time is a common cause. Loss of loved ones, children, prohibited contact with loved ones/children, impending consequences such as prison, living a life with a debilitating illness or condition are some of the examples. Typically if the person survives the first year after this a semblence of normalcy occurs but until then behavior can be highly erratic and often self destructive.
Teen angst. The pressures of adapting to adult stress while still limited as well as confined is added to pain of self discovery. Juice it with a strong dose of hormones and stir it all up with a lack of experience, strong idealism/passions and give it a whack with the fact that few have coping mechanisms yet for all this and you have teen angst. This angst often disengages a teen's brain. Sometimes it is disengaged in very self destructive behavior, suidicde/attempts are one of those.
The attention seeker. Typically severely depressed, extreme issues with self esteem and lack of self knowledge. Frequently also combined with mental illness. Normally young. Often female. The attempt is both a dance with death and a means to cry out for help. The thrill of trying to cheat death playing into often macabe surroundings.
Except for the extreme desperation and extreme remorse all of these things have one thing in common. The person doesn't want to die. People who face catastropic life changes and truely want to die are often methodical about thier own death. Tie up loose ends if they have time. They also pick very efficient methods. Though I did know one guy who literally blew half his brain out in a suicide attempt and lived. He was even mostly functional but would never be a whole person again.
No most causes of attempted suicide, they just want something to stop so badly that they are wililng to risk dieing in an effort to get it to stop. Many attempted suicides are only attempts because at the last minute the would be suicider changes thier mind and fails to carry through. Sometimes it is pain or the fear of pain. Sometimes it is the fear of death which suddenly is stronger than the fear of life. Sometimes it is the thoughts of loved ones. Sometimes it is that because they are in such an altered state, they are not only incompentent to live but also incompentent to die. Think about it, to want to die means you have to be pretty messed up at that moment. Doesn't mean a month later that all urges are really gone. On the flip side who here can honestly say they've never thought about it? Never considered ending it all even on just a whim? For example your standing on a tall building. Have you never thought about what it would be like to just step off and take that plunge? Doesn't have to be a reason to do it. A very impetious person might actually try it and then realize what they are doing in the middle of the act. After that how do you explain that you just had a brain fart and it almost killed you LOL. You don't. You lie, first to yourself. You rationalize why you didn't want to live, then build a case for how sorry your life is. Before anybody actually asks you a very well constructed set of reasoning exists that can actually influence future actions and is totally believed by the person who built this construct. How else could a human face such an act as almost killing themselves just because. No reason, it just seemed like the thing to do at the time.
Make sense?

Usually, at least where I live, such an attempt is a crime for one thing. But the usual chain of events is that the patient is taken to an Emergency room where any physical/physiological harm is stabilized, and then the pt is either admitted to the Hospital for further care or referred to the local Psychiatric center for evaluation and observation. Additionally, a large number of suicide attempts are a cry for help, not a means to an end.

Some people attempt repeatedly. They have a more solid reason or they are more seriously ill. They need immediate attention from family, society & a good clinical psychaitrist.
Why are you in a haste? You have to die anyway. The right time will come its own.
Let's try experimenting with life for the time being.

People who really want to kill themselves DO NOT "screw up" their suicides, period. The vast majority of attempted suicides are done by people who are crying out for attention, in some form or another. There are people who've attempted suicide literally DOZENS of times. The fact is, they never wanted to die. Think about how easy it is to end your own life if you really wanted to--it's not something any intelligent being can screw up unless they intentionally do it.

because they need more time to come up with a new strategy or a new approach in killing themselves... the first attempt didnt work because it was not properly planned and tested... so the next attempt would be carefully planned... drawings.... blueprints... tests... and within a month or two they should be dead.....

Many do.
Most do only try much later when the attention they got from the attempt faded.
If you really want to die you know what to do. What to swallow, where to jump, what to cut.

wow thats really harsh and upsetting. People that do kill themselves are selfish and its not really a joking matter. People who attempt sucide later come to realize they are happy it didnt work and move on with their lives.

It is too easy to die, if you miss it, that's because you don't want to die but just attract attention on you.
