Cigarettes are extremely addicting, even more so than alcohol and many drugs. Are you aware that there are alcoholics in this world? Drug addicts? Do you wonder why they "refuse" to quit, knowing the health consequences? They would quit, if quitting were just that easy, but it isn't. It's a constant battle between the knowledge of how harmful the effects of taking the substance are to your body in the long run versus the immediate and urgent need to get a quick fix in the short term. Most people are forced to rationalize their decision to continue abusing the drug because quitting is so hard.

Well, everyone makes decisions based on certain motivations.
Men are creatures who run after pleasures and run away from pain. And different people have different priorities and diff definations for what constitutes as pleasure and what constitutes as pain.
Most people who do not quit smoking even though they know the consequecences because:
- The feeling of smoking (to look cool, to feel calm.. etc) ranks top priority..
- The toughness of breaking the habit or the hassle of doing that outweighs the percieved benefits.
- It simply feels happier for them to continue to smoke since if they stop, they will just save some money and there are no immediate tangible benefits.
- Health is something that everyone desires.. but most people put it at last priority and people will not do things for health until they lose it.
If you want to help someone to quit smoking, you must first know what is most important to them in the world and you must be able to highlight to them what are the pains of continuing to smoke.
eg, a family oriented man would be likely to stop smoking of you gave him alot of books about how smoking will affect the health of his baby, the health of his family, the intelligence of his baby and even share this story I once heard about a baby who died of SIDS and the doctor mentioned that it was most likely due to the second hand smoke from his father.
When the pros outweight the cons, quitting smoking will become something that anyone can do :)

Even though I quit smoking totally, I can tell you it is not easy to kick the habit. I have been a smoker for more than 30 years, at last I am very, very lucky to manage to quit. During my stay in hospital for more than 1 week due to an operation (not related to smoking), having 4 bags of "drip". Thus, taking this opportunity to quit smoking.

The main reason is because smoking is enjoyable.
The second reason is because it is addictive.
Everyone who smokes knows that it can lead to a slow, painful death. Well, so can old age. We all have to die at sometime from something.
My life motto is "Living a healthy and righteous lifestyle won't make you live longer; it just seems longer."

Well smokers are not really addicted to smoking, its the nicotine in tobacco that gets them hooked. Nicotine is actually safe, its the smoke that contains the carcinogens that can cause lung cancer.
And to answer your question...When your an addict your an addict, they no longer can control themselves because their body need that substance they are addicted to.

They are addicted to the nicotine, because it's a drug. They want to quit, but they cannot.
