I have NO idea, but i'm waiting to come back to this question and see what others say!!! My son does it when he sleeps, keeps his eyes half open. My husband jokes and says he looks possessed... it is kind of creepy cause his eyes roll back and all you see are the whites! But i'm glad to know its not uncommon...

This was the same question I had asked many years ago. Well,
I did discover the answer about 10 years ago. I know that some infants and toddlers do sleep with there eyelids half open and it's a benign thing that they eventually grow out of. (I only write this to bring education to other parents that there might be something more serious going on and it might be a disorder). But, sometimes like in my case it's an indication of a connective tissue (collagen)disorder. From the time my son was born until his death at 14 years old, he always slept with his eyes half opened, my daughter did not. He wasn't diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), until 3 days before he died. If he had been diagnosed sooner he would still be here. It was after losing him that I began to doing research on every aspect of EDS. I spoke with many others who have this disorder and discovered that they also sleep with their eyes half opened. This confirmed for me that this simple thing - like sleeping with their eyes half opened, could be the first indication that there might be a problem. So, I ask all the parents out there to check out these website below to see if your children have any of these symptoms. I only wish that I would have read something like this 10 years ago to put the thought in my mind.

I'm praying that none of your children have EDS or any other connective tissue disorder.

Sincerely,
Daves Mom

Some normal people sleep with their eyes slightly open. This symptom, however, should prompt a search for an underlying neurological problem, namely bilateral facial weakness. One of the more common causes of such a problem, particularly if it has gone unnoticed by the individual, is a form of muscular dystrophy called facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. This may be quite mild in some cases and may present only as some asymptomatic facial weakness and mild shoulder girdle muscle atrophy. It runs in families from generation to generation.

While there is no way of treating several of the causes of facial weakness, eyes could be held closed by pads, or even by surgery in extreme cases. I strongly recommend an evaluation by an ophthalmologist,

OK I know this isn't really medically correct but will tell you what the Dr told my mom when we were kids(I'm almost 40)
as kids we all slept with eyes part way open and when my mom asked the Dr about it he told her our eye lashes were too long....
I also thing it must be something genetic because all my kids also sleep with eyes open some

no idea but I did it as a kid (who knows maybe i still do) and now my son does it. My sister use to get so angry because she would talk to me and i wouldn't reply but she didn't realise I was asleep with my eyes open. Boy did she use to yell and i would wake up having no idea why

I know that children with vascular Ehlers Danlos sleep with their eyes half closed.

I do not know the medical reasons and hadn't realy thought of it before. I just know that it is somthing that I have always done. I never outgrew it (I am 20). It doesn't bother me other than my eyes are dry in the morning.
