I am having my catered.... but the key is to have a couple of choice...
Chicken dish
Meat Dish
Pasta Dish
Fish Dish
Most people have at least 3, I would do two at the very least.
I am guessing your making this yourself?? I would check on Line for different receipts and try them out before you wedding. That way you can taste them- you can price them as well. Like how much it cost you to make 6 servings.

Cake and coffee or dessert buffet

Appetizers from the frozen section of Costco/Sam's - can be used in place of dinner since they are very hearty

Pasta bar - inexpensive to fix and filling

Anything you like from your favorite local restaurant or Boston Market - most are more than happy to cater for you and half the price of a regular wedding caterer

Check out grocery stores and their deli department. They can perpare trays for cheap. Go for just finger foods instead of a meal, this will help you save money in the long run.

You didn't mention if it was sit down or buffet. If a buffet you could have baked ziti, meatballs, chicken wings, some type of potatoe, chips, pretzels, simple party trays like fruit trays, veggie trays, pepperoini, ring bologna and cheese trays. Finger sandwich trays. I hope this helps good luck and congratulations.
