When you are ready to stop or reduce your child’s use of a dummy, the following ideas can help.
Take some pressure off by reminding yourself that sucking a dummy never becomes a lifelong habit. Many children will stop using a dummy by themselves.
Choose your timing – a period of change or stress for parent or child may not be a good time to give up.
If he is old enough to understand, talk to him about giving up the dummy.
When you and your child are ready to kick the dummy habit, begin by restricting dummy use to certain times and places, such as in the car or cot; this gives him a chance to get used to being without the dummy.
Encourage the use of other comforters such as a blanket or teddy if these are more socially acceptable.
Once he is coping for longer periods without the dummy, set a time and date then take away the dummy.
Mark the occasion of becoming dummy-free with a special reward.
Finally, try not to turn back. No matter how well you have prepared your child for this change, expect some discomfort and some protest. It may even help to literally loose the dummy (throwing them all away) so that the temptation to turn back is removed.

Is it pressure from others that makes you want your child to stop using a dummy? If the answer to this is yes, then ignore them, this is your child and you must do what is right for your child and you. I have always hated dummies but found my youngest child needed one to sleep through the night. When it fell apart, he would not accept a new one, so my theory is to let time take its natural course. Best of luck from a Granny who's grandchildren all suck their thumbs... Now try taking that away........

If its a male child he will need his dummy for the rest of his life! Other than that...... give the little one a teething ring (smeared with a little natural honey) for a few Min's per day and slowly ween the dummy away from them. It worked for my little one!

We never used a dummy. I never had one when I was a baby, my daughter never had one and her daughter doesn't have one.
Babies are so cute, but I hate to see them with this big plastic thing stuck in their mouths!
For those parents trying to wean their kids off them - good luck. For new parents - don't even offer your babies a dummy!

Whenever you think the time is right, it's hard on the poor babes, but they do survive without them, I had four kids, they all had dummies, we always went to the park and threw them to the ducks for their babies, it worked for us!!when the kids asked for their dummies we were able to remind them that they had given to the baby ducks.

HUH?? Are you referring to a pacifier? That is the only thing that my husband can asumme when I asked him.. if that is the case - we just took it away from our son but that worked out for us because he was ready to give it up. Now mind you he is 8 years old and still has his blankee.. that he sleeps with every night.
Hugs from a Loving Mom to a Brillant, as well as beautiful 8 year old Jared and Our Angel, Zachary (taken to soon but who will always remain in our heart) ~ Mel

Mine were never given the chance to get hooked on them. I would "lose" it in the car, the sink, bathroom, wherever. They got tired of looking for them & gave up.
