Blame it on the culture. American men are held to a narrow definition of manhood that excludes public displays of affection for another man. Remember, even public displays of affection for a woman can result in a claim of sexual harrassment and if done at work, can result in dismissal. I believe we are alone in the developed nations in being embarrassed - both in law and in practice - in the expression of any kind of affection other than a brief hug. In russia, men meeting hug and kiss each other on both cheeks. European males have the freedom to express affection toward both sexes with hugs, handshakes, kisses on the cheek or a slam dunk on the mouth. America has never been able to handle sexuality despite the brief, crazy late 60's when bisexuality was not only in but the big thing. That was the only and very brief "if it feels good do it" movement. Of course people overdid it and the religious right took great offense and ushered in an era of chastity in public and they, too, went to far. I feel sorry for teen males and young men in this society because they are naturally most comfortable with members of their own sex and there is a strong "love" in the brotherly sense for their buddies, aka: homeboys. Gang members know how strong the bond is between each of them and the other guys. But, young males have been taught to shun those boys and men who display any kind of affection toward each other. I don't get it. Men and women are both human with the same needs and wants yet the female role allows considerable affection between women and virtually no display among men. Unless, of course, you are a male athlete and then you can hug, kiss and grab each other on the a ss. Migod we are strange.
Contrast that with the advertising young people are subjected to. So often the male model/actor has an androgynous appearance that challenges the gorgeous woman in sheer beauty. What are guys to think? Causes a lot of stress and worry for a guy.
The solution, of course, is for each of us to reject political correctness and live our lives ethically and honestly and do the right thing. So, if you want to hug a dude friend, you have my permission to do so. The religious right, well-meaning, will not comment unless we all start hugging each other and planting a peck on the cheek of men and women we care about. Come to think of it, all you guys out there, if the occasion merits it, hug your buddy or homeboy or any guy you admire and feel good and correct about it. I suspect such emotional freedom will extend your life because we know that the feeling of joy and accomplishment does just that.
