I am using Office 2000. This should work for versions 2000 and newer. If you are in an older version, try it and see if it works. I don't have a way to test it.

You're going to like this!

Have the Word document open.

Select the group of cells in Excel that you want to be put in Word and updated. Move your cursor to the edge of the selection box in Excel, Right click and Drag to Word.

If you can arrange your Excel and word so you can click and drag your cell(s) while viewing some scrap of the document, then you can drag to that scrap and drop. Otherwise, drag to the taskbar where 'Word' shows and wait for it to pop to the front, continuing to hold onto the drag, then continue dragging into the document.

It will give you a menu with Move, Copy, Link Excel Object here and some others. Choose Link Excel Object here.

Move it where you want it and there you go.

Each time you open the Word document, it will ask if you want to update. If you have them both open, and you change the excel figures, you see it change in front of your eyes!

It is important to note that the location of the files and the names of the files must remain the same or you will have to link again. If you have a regular report you do, keep the master files linked and save them when the changes are made and if you need a record of the past reports, do a save as and save under different names. This should retain the connection integrity. You will have to remember when you open your historic files to answer NO to update, so the figures will stay what they were back on the correct date. Answer YES when you open your master file.

Note: If you accidentally answer Yes in an historic file, just close and don't save, then open it again and answer NO.

It is known as Paste Special feature, once you copy the cells in Excel, go to Word and ...
Edit > Paste Special
select the option that says "Paste Link" to enable Word to check for the newer values in Excel file every time you open the Word file.

Be aware that the File name of Excel file and file path of both Excel and Word file are need to be the same to make this link work, otherwize the link is broken and you got the values of the most recent update

Personally I do not like this idea because of its codependency, but if you want to do it, here's how:

In Microsoft Word go to: Insert > Object > Create From File
then point to the already saved Excel file and press OK.

This will embed the Excel file in Word, and to update the data all you have to do is double click it.
