It usually comes from flees. Flees are carriers to all sorts of parasites that they can get from any wildlife such as raccoons or bats. When dogs lick temselves, they ingest fleas or flee larvae containing parasite eggs.

It depends on the type of parasite, where it is found: on plants, in the water, within/on other host, etc. And a dog may get them with meat, water, by contact with other animals, etc. Parasites, depending on concrete species and the way of contamination, live then in different parts of the dog: some inside organs (heart, liver, etc.), others inside blood cells and other cells, on the skin of certain areas, brain, etc.
E.g. a newly "born" flea may jump on the dog from the ground when the shell breaks due to vibration, noise of coming through animal. Just because this baby wants to eat. LOL.
Parasites like other animals found their own niche of survival during evolution. And this niche is a bit not pleasant for hosts. But most of parasites kill their host rarely, exactly because of the fact that it is their host, a source of life.
If you want to find a concrete information, I think it is best to go to Merk veterinary manual on-line and search by words "dog parasite" at http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/21206.htm Some parasites and also infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, etc.) may use dogs only as intermediate hosts, reservoir and may be not harmful for them, but exercise their parasitism and full action on other animals or on humans (antropo-zoonoses).

Same way people get parasites. The definition of a parasite is that it lives off other organisms - so they latch onto your dog to survive.

Heartworm comes from mosquitoes that carry the larvae.
Hook worm comes from stepping on infected feces or sniffing it or carried by fleas that they eat while grooming.
The same for Round worm.
