I go out and meet women from time to time, and after having a conversation with them, they usually ask where I work.
After I tell them that I am a mailman and work for the post office their tone of conversation changes dramatically.
Are woman afraid of going out with a guy that works for the post office because they think that they might go "postal"..or is it because they think that being a mailman is a menial and low paying job and they would have no life with a person that works there.
I don't know,I do pretty well income wise at the post office and the pay is better than a lot of civilian jobs that is for sure.
So what is the stigma really? Should I lie next time a woman asks me where I work? I tried saying I work for the government but I usually end up telling them anyways..I am not a good liar and do not have a good poker face.
I would be interested in hearing your responses. thanks

Women who are going to judge you on where you work are not worth your time or energy. They are simply shallow. There is nothing wrong with working at a post office, it is an essential service to everyones daily life, it is a job, and as you say well paying. I think the women that has a problem with going out with the mailman has the problem.
No next time you should not lie about where you work, the women you do lie to will end up being the one that has no hangups about where you work and genuinly likes you for who you are and your character and not for what kind of work you do.

Sounds like you need confidence in how you sell what your job is. If you come across like I work for the post office, you know where people kill each other over the mail and I'm a crazy person. Yeah the tone of the conversation will change. But if you talk about some of the more interesting things about the job and how much you like it, more then likely you'll keep the womans interest. Just a thought.

Personally, I've never looked at it as a stigma, and didn't realize other women did. But, my first guess would be like you said... the fear of going postal, or perhaps you don't show enough enthusiasm when talking about it. Ask if perhaps she was expecting a millionaire? LOL.

However, lying is not a good way to start a relationship. Maybe play around a bit first, and teasingly ask her to guess, while you provide positive clues as to what your job entails.

There is no reason to lie, it's a respectable job. I am not sure what the hell is wrong wiht those girls cause last time I checked you did have a job, right?! Just keep on doing what you are doing and the right one wil come along and she won't give a damn where you work as long as you have a job.
