I lived in Brighton for 12 years and have now lived in Edinburgh for 40+. I guess I would say Edinburgh, though I like Brighton having been back to visit a few times. Edinburgh is probably not as sunny but we do get hot wearther, especialy the last few years. Much easier to get from Ed. to the hills and fresh air, and its close to the sea anyway. Take a visit and try it out!

Are you just asking for the sake of it, or do you really have to choose? They are completely different!! Edinburgh is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourite places in the world and I would live there if not for the fact that it's bl**dy cold in Scotland, and a long way north from friends and family. Brighton would suit you if you prefer the beach life. The big bonus is being so close to London, and therefore great transport links with the rest of Europe.

Edinburgh... lovely city, and you get the Festival, which is always fun (as long as you're not trying to get anywhere in the city centre in a hurry). Good communication links, and very friendly people. Good education system, if you got children, and the air is a lot clearer than it is down south! I know that, having moved up here three years ago. Best thing I ever did!

Edinburgh is too cold and worse still is full of Scots. No choice, Brighton.
