My dog is a chow and feist mix. He is 9 months old and weighs about 25 pounds. He supposedly just bit a neighborhood kid today so I now have to take him outside on a leash. The reason I haven't been is beacause we live in a neighborhood where all the dogs run around and get along. My dog just got a little rough while a kid was playing with him. Nothing to go to the hospital for, thank god. So he doesn't know what to do on a leash so he tries to bite me. And he wants to go outside all the time and sits at the door and whines. It's not an option for a fence in our neighborhood and he was just doing great being able to run and play with all the dogs, but now he will have to stay in the house instead of going out regularly to play. What can I do about the leash thing. He goes crazy when I try to get him come back and have to pull on it.

I won't get a choke collar. And I can't tap him on the butt or anything because I can't get that close or he will bite my hand. He trys to roll around on the ground and then just gets tangled and that's when it gets harder trying to untangle him. And what do I do about all the whining?

This is a very big change for him. You are just going to have to disipline him and show him who the boss is. When he tries to bite you, tap him gently on the nose or rear to let him know that it's wrong. He will learn gradually. Or you can also use treats as a reward. That should probably be a last resort. As for the going outside part. Maybe you could get a special stake (one that goes in the ground...very easy to find) and a long chain so that he can still run around and play, but not as freely. This will also help him get used to the leash.

This little item will do the trick. The Gentle Leader...read all directions before using and be sure to put it on tight enough the very first time.. You can get it at most pet supplies, on eBay, or on line catalogs..costs about $14-$15 for that size dog..

Get rid of the Chow. They are useless dogs, I have one. Their instincts are special for indoor protection against intruders. Chow is very fixed in their ways by instinct. Chow notoriously attacks children or anything small.

check out dance4life's answer - I agree with most of it. The key here I think is that NEVER should nipping / biting be allowed. You MUST be in charge of this dog. By whatever means it takes. Good luck.

Sounds like a spoiled dog. He should've been punished for bighting, and also for bighting you. That should never be tolerated.

A "gentle leader", or a haltie type head restraint. Be sure to correct him when he goes to nip you.
