I was an emotional eater, heck I guess I still am. It's all about gaining control of your mind. There is so much we can't control in life but our body and mind is the one thing that we can control. I want to suggest Yoga, I'm some new age crazy I tried once with a friend just for the heck of it and I was hooked couldn't believe it. It might work for you at least give it a try what have you got to loose. If not I hope you find something because it sucks to be an emotional eater.

First of all you have to understand exactly why you are an emotional eater. Food is like therapy. A way to deal with your emotions and relieve tension. Think about what exactly are the issues you are facing. You are using food as a distraction from the problems you have. Become aware of these problems then develop different methods to deal with them. Learn how to manage your emotions in another way. If you have too much to handle and feel you need professional help, then seek it.

Well, you are way ahead of a lot of emotional eaters, because you are aware that you are one. I would say to try to not give in to the urge to eat, just tell yourself, "I will think about this for an hour, and if I still want to eat, I will just eat a small amount." If you don't give in to the urge right away, and put a time limit on yourself before you allow yourself to eat, you should be able to control this urge by rewarding yourself with a small amount of food for being able to control the urge.

wow Kathleen V, that's great advice. *eyeroll.*

No , I have the problem with emotional eating, and I've recently starting reading a lot of fitness and diet magazines. It's good to always think of the long term whenever you reach for a bag of chips or a cookie. Think about, "I'm going to enjoy this for a few minutes, but in a few years, will I look at my pants size and regret it?" it will be hard but it has a lot to do with your personal self control. Just keep trying and focus on your goal of eating SMALLER portions, and turning to other outlets of emotion like art (sculpting, drawing), exercise, talking with a friend or just meditation. You can do it!

try and spend lots of time in places where food isn't available. i was an emotional eater but now i got a job and i can only go out to eat once a day (at work). that solved my problem.
