It is a transcription method, used by secretaries when taking dictation from their boss. Gregg and Pitman are styles of shorthand, once used, frequently, by secretaries, to take dictation from their boss.
It is a series of stokes from a pen or pencil that form symbols, later translated into words by the secretary, who uses a pen or pencil when taking shorthand. The symbols mean nothing to the average person, but, the pen or pencil strokes are translated into everyday words. Today, shorthand is rarely used, as, most offices use dictating equipment where the boss dictates onto a cassette tape and is typed by the secretary..
