And let's not forget he was just a young lad with nothing more than a third-grade education. Had he spent previous years in fabricating the story, he must have had an excellent memory! How else could he recite a 500-page story from start to finish, word for word, without reviewing earlier chapters along the way, as a scribe recorded his words, and end up with a book containing a history and doctrine that is consistent not only with itself but also the Bible?
I don't think I could have written such a book by the time I was 25, even after having completed high school and college. And even if I did, I seriously doubt I could organize a Church that would eventually have more than 13 million followers around the world, especially if there were people always trying to kill me.
By comparison, it took nine people a period of seven years to translate the Book of Mormon into Thai during the 1970s, which included the processes of translation, review, typing, editing, and proofreading.

Dear jiggliemon,
just wanted to point out that Mormons are not Christians. That is why they are categorized as a cult. Just thought that your question should label it "mormon studies" and not Christian mormon study because there is nothing Christian about the "mormon studies" (just the fact that the book of Mormon is used) and not exclusively the Bible tells you there is a difference.
There are many problems with the book of mormon. In the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy the book tells us how to identify a false prophet (someone who claims to speak on God's behalf but is not truly of God) and that is if they prophesize about something and it does not come true he is a false prophet. Well if you go back enough editions- you will find false prophecies in the book of Mormon (ie: about the return of Christ, etc.- while the Bible teaches no one knows the hour or day- but are to live in such a way as to be prepared) that have been revised out with each new edition.
So just wanted to clarify that for all the people- so that Christianity and Mormonism are not confused. They are two different religions- with two different beliefs, and as you've pointed out two different basis for their faith (the bible vs the book of mormon).
Hope that helps,
Nickster

Actually, the amount of time between him starting telling people about the event and when the book was published was over 5 years... I could make a brilliant story in that amount of time.

Considering every major cult watch group has labeled the LDS church as a cult, I can't seem to place much stock in a group that demands and milks its followers dry. However, the Mormon faith has produced some brilliant people, such as Stephen Covey.
This didn't answer your question. I'm addicted to this damn website.

If I'm not mistaken, he claimed to have the help of the angel Maroni. Miraculous help. I believe he did have help, but I don't believe Maroni was an angel, I think it was a demon deceiving Joseph. Nothing about Mormonism matches up with original teachings of Jesus and His apostles.

He simply Plagiarized a book.
The believers will still have that BURNING IN THEIR BOSOM.
( I believe it is a demon--I posed that to a number of Mormon missionaries and they almost had heart attacks.--but they did not laugh.)
