Customary - only if the service was of good standard. Compulsory- no. Good service, good food will bring in a few extras dollars on top of the bill. It will also bring you back to enjoy another round of fine wine and dining. People should give credit when credit is due and tipping is a way of doing this.

I live in Australia and have to admit I don't eat out often. When I do, if I get good service, I will leave a tip, however I don't believe it is customary to do so. Just another Americanism infiltrating down-under in my humble opinion.

I'm in oz & waiting tables is all I've really ever done in the last 10 years. It isn't as customary to tip as it is in the USA but it is considered to be a thanks for good service. If you dont tip, we just talk about you whe your gone, lol. Not really, depends where you eat as well. Most upper class restaurants expect tips but in a local cafe, its no so common. The wages for this industry are much better here than the usa too so its not really such a big deal to tip. When functions are held, I personally think its a sign of gratitude to tip but if its just you & your partner or friend out for lunch or dinner, its different.

Mate, you're doing what you're paid to do and you're paid nicely to do it. In different international locations, waiters are paid a tiny volume (if something) and all of us know that they desire concepts to stay to tell the story yet it is only not the case in Australia. You get a sturdy salary (and perks as you're saying) so why must you get a tip to boot - this is only not how this is finished right here. i don't get concepts and neither does every physique else i be responsive to, so why must you purely on account which you're a waiter?

Yes, if you find a place where tips are not customary then I guess it would be up to you really.
