Ask at the shelter if you can volunteer hours on weekends or after work...If they need help as much as most do, they will try to comply with your request..Tell them you will clean kennels or do grounds work..feeding, etc..
If they don't want you to volunteer, You can ask them of you can make payments.
If nothing else, this will show them your sincerity.
However, if it is a pit bull you might be out of luck..as so often they are not given a second chance..

Bub, $1200 is too much for such an offence! C'mon, man! The dog ain't bite nobody! It just give the guy a scare. And who asked that 'smart' guy to run? C'mon, don't they know they're not suppose to run when a dog's chasing you? It only make matters worst. Just turn round, hold yer ground, look at 'im but don't look 'im in the eye and he'll stop and bark at ya. But 'e won't bite. Has no one ever heard o' the idiom 'A dog's bark is worst than it's bite'? Unless of course your dog is a trained attack dog... But then again a trained attack dog won't attack unless he's told... Come on. He ain't gonna tackle a prey that's larger than 'im without back up! If this big thing he's chasing suddenly turns around, he's gotta be cautious. A cornered animal is a dangerous animal.
Anyway, back to yer problem.. Have ye tried reasonin' with those animal control guys? Sure ye have, stupid me.. Well, talk to your neighbours, get their views. Some will be sympathetic and understanding enough to help you get your dog back, ask them to go with you to wherever they've held yer precious and talk to the authority that's wiltholdong yer dog, and see if those animal control freaks will listen to reason..
You migh have told them about the situation you're in, but they won't listen, right? That's because it's human nature. We're all selfish, whether we want to admit it or not, we don't want to know the other person's situation or problems cause we have more than enough ourselves. So, when you go to talk to them next, DON'T tell them what your probelms are, tell them what options they have and what are they going to do about it. Detail the effects how each and every option will affect them. For example, how they are helping themsleves by letting your dog go? Think about this..
Worst case scenario: If they don't listen to reason and ya can't get the money (no reason to give them anyway) to free him, ya can always make a racket, go to the media like the guy above suggested if they put yer dog to sleep (though that's a tad bit radical). Or ya can plan a covert ops to spring your doggy from the doggy prison (though this option is only and usually reserved for the really desparate and fanatic dog lovers).

I have a friend need to pay $800 to local council when her 2 dogs got out. The animal controller collected her dogs in her front yard. Good luck for your case.
You still have to get her out first before go to the court.
You may get someone else to visit your dog and show intresting of your dog and let your friend to buy him back in less amount.

I never had this type of situation happen, but 1200 seems way too steep. From now on though when your at work ,keep your dog in the house. If you have to, keep your dog in a crate while in the house.Way to many bad things can happen while your dog is out side all day by hisself while you're at work

if your dog gets put in "jail" they don't charge you 1200 dollars that's crazy they don't even charge you they let you get your dog and then when you pick him/her up they will give you at ticket and you might have to appear in court and then they will decide later...it's a dog not a person you don't have to pay for a dog to get out of pound..and the pund has a 3 day period before the dog is put to sleep, not 2 weeks I smell B..S..

Sounds excessive usually the fine for dog at large is about $65
Are they the police or humane society?
I would contact police if it's the humane society that has your pet.

This dog of yours does it have all of his shots, for rabies, and what ever.. If you take your dog to a veterinarian in your area maybe they could explain this to the judge in layman terms so your dog will be released to you..
Good Luck!

$1200 is crazy! I agree, get the media involved. They love these "bug-hugger" stories. But you can use them to help in this case.
