You know, I have seveal cats and I love them all. I don't know why their purr is so relaxing to us. I only know that when I pet my cats and they purr, that means they are happy and content. They feel safe; secure.

When they purr, I know why they purr and it makes me happy to know they feel that way. I am happy they feel that way about me.

A cat is not like a dog. If a cat likes you, it will let you know and a cat will not like just about everyone, like many dogs do.

If you can win over a cat, you have accomplished something. I love cats. Well, MOST cats. Some are real buggers. LOL

A cat's purr is relaxing for us for a couple of reasons I think. One, it is rythmic and soothing; like white noise. It's not intrusive or annoying and we can enjoy it in the background without trying to hum along LOL Secondly, it tells us our cat is content and that makes us happy and feel relaxed so it's like we unconsciously feel better just by hearing it :)

We know they feel relaxed and secure with us when they purr.

Actually, sometimes they purr when they're frightened or even injured (the purr sounds slightly different in those cases)

I agree with Thomas C,,this is it..because we are living on the same glob called Earth.. and if you are keeping a cat ,,the relaxation is coming from the cat if the cat your pet is purring ,that means is healthy and feeling good..like your kids you are caring about ,,all your live,,,this is ours imagination,,they are save,,they are protected,,and we are here on the Earth,,to protect the lives of the kids and ours pets ,,cats .dogs,,horses..and than we can feel the rest and happiness what to do to make them happy to,,

Because.. when I hear a cat purr, I know that he/she is happy and very content with life and it is satisfying to me to know that it is happy with me and it relaxes me to know that.

The frequency of the vibration of a cat's purr has possible healing properties:

Science aside, there's just something about a sweet little contented furry baby purring "I love you"...

its the vibration that gets us. Its a steady hum that relaxes us. It also means the cat is calm, comfortable and feels safe. Its a great sound!!!

I dont think it's so much the sound as the vibration. Any sort of rhythmic beat or vibration is calming to us because it takes us back to sounds of the womb.
