The apostle Paul said he crucified himself daily. That he was dead to the flesh. Meaning that we should sacrifice (kill) our fleshly desires; the things that would please us in a carnal (worldly, earthy, lustful) manner. We accomplish this through the inner working of the Holy Spirit. When we accept Christ as our savior, the Holy Spirt has already come to dwell within us. Paul said that no man could confess that Jesus is the Christ without (aid of) the Holy Ghost.
Just pray daily that God directs your path. Acknowledge him in everything you do and take him (consciously) everywhere you go. If you make your bed in hell, he'll find you there! Jesus never leaves or forsakes you.
Those who are born again are dead to sin, but we still must war with the flesh every day. Just know that if you confess your sin to Jesus, he is just and faithful to forgive. When you are tempted, God gives a way of escape! He does not withdraw that escape even if you give in to the temptation. You can always repent and turn around. He is a God of second chances!

The Bible says that man is a tri-partisan being, having a body, a soul, and a spirit.
None of us are in God's image. What we have is a corrupted left over remnant of what was once God's image. We are all in the image of fallen Adam.
The spirit is dead and must be born again.
The soul is under the wrath of God.
The body lives, but is corrupted and dying.
When a sinner gets saved, the spirit is born again and the soul is saved. The body still has to die. But even it gets born again in the form of a resurrection.

From my understanding of Christian dogma, free will is part of the "being dead in sin". Once you choose to follow God, you give him your will and the free will is over with; being "born again" means laying down your will to God.
Incidentally, this is my single reason for not being a Christian. I choose to retain my free will.

I, too, have never heard that and spent most of my recent years learning about religions. Personally, I feel that the only thing that matters if He knows that you're a morally good person. It's a good way to think. :)
