I wouldn't say weed is mentally addictive. When I was in college (i.e., went to UNM in Albuquerque) in the mid 60's, weed was easy to find then and it was very good. I remember the Alcapulco Gold and it only cost $12 a lid (i.e., ounce). However, the best stuff was when my friend brought back some black weed from Nam. He said it was the best they had over there and man it was. Smooth smoke and made me laugh all the time.
I stopped smoking weed in 1972 and started again in 2004. Why? I have a 20 year-old son that smokes. So we share a joint now and then. As a father I preach safety and limit your use to weed which he does. I remember the days when people wasted their lives on heroin, glue and speed. Today's menace is meth and crack although heroin makes a comeback now and then. Talk about the grim reaper!.
Today's good weed now cost $200 to $300 an ounce. The stuff is big time potent compared to my college days and very harsh to smoke. Perhaps it has something to do with my age. Of course, you have to be careful in that some folks lace the weed with meth. If my son contiunes to use the stuff, I will purchase a vaporiser. Best brand is in Germany for about 550 euro. This way you save your lungs and still get the full effect of the weed. However, I don't see how people can function with today's stuff even though I watch them work after using it.
Personally, I think weed should be legalized and sold from coffee shops like they do in Amsterdam. Currently you are seeing a tolerance among police departments toward weed as long as you do not deal it. I do not think it is right to smoke weed while driving or driving under the influence of weed. There is no need. Just have some friends over and chill along with your favorite beverage like a good wine and some tunes.
I remember in college, my friend and I rented a two bedroom house, we had people wall to wall on a Saturady night and there was a haze of smoke outside the house. People tolerated it then. We were good neighbors and caused no trouble. It was always interesting that we played a good game of hearts while smoking and drinking wine. No harm no foul.
Weed does have medicinal value especially for people in pain and discomfort while taking chemo-therapy. But don't kid yourself, weed is a release from stress and the real-world. One side effect is that if you use it too much, you get a little slow in the head but it has great entertainment value. Nothing like a good stone and putting on hard rock n' roll.
