I would check flea markets and antique stores. Check your local newspaper for yard sales--you can almost always find one there. If you lok on somewhere like ebay--beware of shipping prices.

Check out flee markets and auctions. Many older desk chairs rock. Do worry about people that put down the idea of a rocking chair in a classroom. A teacher rocking while reading to students has the advantage of being able to rock to the pace of what your reading. Also rocking chairs help your circulation If you are not planning to use the rocking chair at your desk, you can station it at the back of the classroom and have your students turn their desks around to face it. This helps because your students will associate the opposite direction with being read a story or whatever subject you plan to teach from that direction and pay more attention. The rocking chair will make you more comfortable while grading papers and tests after school lets out.

As a sub for over 20 yrs, I can tell you that teachers who add reading stations and comfortable seating, provide a nurturing environment.
I would stick with a basic wood rocker, (Crackerbarrel sells them, also Lowe's/Home Depot) and get cushions at WalMart that match the decor of the room. At our elem school, it's common for the teachers to buy very inexpensive cushions for the students' chairs. Sitting for long periods of time is easier and it makes the room look inviting.
Good luck on the new year...

Yard sales, estate sales, flea markets, and even try placing an ad in your local paper under the "looking for" or "items wanted" section. Someone could read it and have one they want to get rid of :-)
p.s. forget about those negative comments. The reason (some) students don't have a healthy respect for teachers is a direct reflection of their parents' attitudes towards schools!!! Really, how could a chair make you a bad teacher?????????

Why not just put in a bed and get on with it..then you can lay down as you speak to your class..
No wonder kids don't have a healthy respect for teachers anymore..why don't you just TEACH.
