You've latched on to the distinction between the Northern and Southern Jewish kingdoms which existed from about 930 BC through 720 BC. For a while, "Israel" and "Judah" referred to politically distinct nations, both of whom consisted of Jews. But by and large, the two terms are used interchangably, for reasons that should be evident below.

The Northern kingdom is generally known as "Israel" whereas the Southern kingdom is generally known as "Judah". Technically, there were a couple of tribes that remained loyal to the Davidic monarchy in the Southern kingdom, but as Judah was by far the most populous and largest territorially, the Southern kingdom was known simply as "Judah".

The Northern kingdom, consisting of 10 tribes, was destroyed by the Assyrians aroudn 720 BC. These are the so-called "Ten Lost Tribes", the subject of many a historical pipe dream and conspiracy theory. The Assyrians were brutal conquerers and tended to eradicate or interbreed with conquered peoples to the point that they ceased to exist as distinct people's. This has largely happened to the northern tribes.

The tribes that made up the Southern kingdom were Judah and Benjamin. The other ten were part of the Northern kingdom and are basically lost. Though there are a few Jews today who identify as belonging to one of the ten "lost" tribes, the vast majority belong to the tribe of Judah, with most of the rest belonging to Benjamin.

Jews is also called Isreal, also called hebrew.

Actually, 2 tribes left, Judah and Levi (I think there is another half tribe, can remember clearly without biblein office).

The other 11 tribes were taken by Assrian, todays Syrian. There were forced inter-marriage, and no longer pure.

Those nations surrounding the Isreal now is actually half mix of the 10 lost tribes.

Others of that 10 tribes were also found in many parts of the world.

People have found, that thse tribes has travelled as far to India and China, from the traditions, and some of the tombs writing, they are identified as Jews.

However, with all the testing, none can justified that they ever travel to US, as claimed by the LDS.

A Israelite is a descendant of the scriptural patriarch Jacob. Jacob was the Grandson of Abraham and the son of Isaac. Jacob had 12 sons these sons were the progenitors of the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob name was changed to Israel (Ysrayl) in Genesis 32:28 and his descendants were called Israelites which denotes they are The children of Jacob or The Children of Israel. The Suffix ITE means a descent from, ISRAEL-ITE means a descendant Jacob who's name was changed to Israel.

A Jew is a person who practice the religion of Judaism. Jew does not mean a descendant of ancient Israel. The ancient Hebrews were not called Jews, that is a mistranslation, Jew is not a Hebrew Word, it's english. Jew is a word that was created by Gentiles and given to the Israelite tribe of Yahudah (Judah). Yah the Most High didn't give his people the name of Jew, this was done by men. Jew is not in the 1611 KJV of the bible. The ancient Hebrew Israelites were not Jews neither are their descendants. But if you practice the religion of Judaism or subscribe to the Jewish culture or traditions, then you can be called a Jew.

Judaism is not of the scriptures. Judaism is a religion created by the people known as Jews. In the scriptures no matter what translation you use, you will not find the word Judaism mention. Yah didn't give Israel a religion called Judaism, he gave us his Laws, Statues, Commandments,& Judgments and told us to obey them. Once we as Israelites are redirected to our mighty one. We follow the direction he has laid out for us in scripture. Jews will be the first to admit that Judaism is not of the scripture it's from their Rabbi's, that's why it's known as Rabbinic Judaism, which consists of several branches.

There are 12 tribes. They divided into two states after the death of Solomon. One was called Israel and one called Judah. But, they were still the people of Israel (Jacob was so called Israel by G-d, and all were of his family). The word Jew evolved from the word Judah.

Don't waste your time on all the above answers, the only 2 that were on the money are RyanD and TheBlackHebre.

I want to add an anecdote regarding the CHOSEN PEOPLE.
The story behind this name is -

God was looking for a tribe to give it his law. He approached many tribes and ask them if they'll follow his law. All the tribes, each in its turn, told God that first they want to know what the laws are and than they might follow him. When God approached the tribe of the Hebrews he ask them the same question - "will you follow my laws" - and they said (as contrary to all other tribes) - "we will follow you". THEY CHOSE GOD without any condition. And only after that God toughed them all his laws.

What I'm trying to say is that the Israelites/Hebrews/ Jews
CHOSE GOD and only after that God chose them.

Meaning - We are not the chosen people, we are the CHOOSING PEOPLE!!!

God chosen the land of Israel for Himself. God favors Mount Zion or the temple mount the place Abraham took Isaac and the place Abraham obeyed God and God fairly blessed Abraham. Many have self assurance Jerusalem is the middle maximum portion of the earth and God's call is written on the mountains of Israel. while Christ returns there'll be no nicer united states than Israel.God chosen for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem no longer too far off from Mr. Moriah or Mount Zion. God calls all Jerusalem at situations Zion.
