Oh he knows how to clean up honey, he just doesn't want to. To get him going, make it a game. I have four boys and I purchased one of those cheap wagons that has three separate compartments (almost like a train of three boxes on wheels). I would walk it around their play area and they would take turns throwing in their toys to see who could make the most baskets at clean-up time. Worked like a charm. After awhile, they just get use to picking up their toys. If you make it fun, kids will do just about anything!

I have an 18 month old. She's pretty good at listening and actaully likes to clean up. It may be her personality, but we make cleaning up a game. She loves to help with the dishes, or wipe the table. We go around the house and see how many toys we can find to put back in the toy box. Maybe it will get harder at 2 1/2!

Well i don't have children but i have three nephews and two nieces that i have witnessed grow up and helped raise. My youngest niece is one and we have already started trying to teach her things like of course what no means and what is okay and what isn't and just starting to work on cleaning up. I think cleaning up goes along with dressing and bathing. Its all personal hygiene and grooming. If your child has grasped the concept of picking something up and putting it into another container ( for example if they are sitting at a table or in a high chair and you give them a small dish and sprinkle out say some cereal and they have the concept of picking them up and placing them all in the dish then they are ready to slowly start working on cleaning up their toys and what not) be patient and go slow and make sure that you keep everything age appropriate but don't let your child use you as their personal maid or be lazy or ignore you just because they don't want to do it. Children are a lot smarter than what we want to give them credit for.

Every child is different. My youngest is a lot like your son. I sing that horrible, but effective "Clean-Up" song from Barney, or I put an immediate reward after; like, "Let's clean up so we can go..." to the park, eat lunch, meet Daddy, have a tub--whatever. Sometimes, when she's real grumpy or defiant it's "No clean up, no..." park, ice cream, extra book, music. The more you do it, the easier he'll get it. We do this for everything. Clean out the van when you get home, clean up the tubby toys, clean up the spilled juice, etc.

my boy is 2 1/2 and he knows to clean up but he does get distracted very easily. When he gets distracted we remind him that he needs to clean up. He also has a 4 yr old brother to learn from but it takes patience. Keep trying....and helping them clean up is a good idea.....just don't do all the cleaning up.....Good Luck!!

Our oldest is 3.5 and is just now getting the hang of picking up her toys--I sound like a broken record when I have her do it but eventually she gets it done. She still gets easily distracted by a toy or her little brother. I think it will still be a year or two before she knows when we tell her to pick up her things that she has to pick them up (and do it in a timely manner).
So....I'd say around 4 or 5 years old? But even then.......when they get to be teenagers we get to start repeating ourselves again. LOL

My babies all started picking up at around 18 months. I just made a game out of it. We would play basket ball with the toys to get them in the toy box. It works pretty well.

My son is 2 1/2 too and he started cleaning up when he was one...little kids like to follow their parents. Just give him time! Or...make a game out of cleaning up! Make it interesting for him and make him feel like he is ''winning'' something for cleaning up...or maybe you could reward him with lollypops or something! Couldnt hurt to try. My son started riding his bike today with no training wheels!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry Im so exited, hes so smart! Sorry for the randomness Im just a proud mommy!

help him clean up. My 15 month old son won't clean up unless I make it a game. I wish he would do it by himself, but I feel it's unrealistic for a kid his age. In my experience (I baby-sat a LOT) kids that age wont pick up toys unless you help them. Remember Mary Poppins? She made cleaning up fun. Of course, she had the song (I wish I knew her trick to make toys go in their bin by themselves!!!) but the point was that with her, cleaning was fun, not a boring chore.
