If my brother can fit two mt. bikes and two hiking packs full of clothes in the back of his Mini Cooper S, then I think you should be able to do the same, and then some. Just do as the others have suggested and remove the front wheel.

At a race last year, I saw one couple in a Matrix...two bikes in there, no problem. Just take the front wheels off and you're good to go...unless you're riding a high wheeler!
My wife and I even put two bikes in her Subaru Outback Sport, which may be a touch smaller than the Matrix.

I think that you can fit two bikes inside it. Maybe you need to remove the front wheel of the bike on top to do it. Put some blankets between them to keep them from scratching each other.

If you fold the back seats down and pull both wheels off you should be able to fit 4 bikes inside. I have seen it done.

Be specific on the type of bike. It may fit 2 tight but you have to take the front wheels and maybe even pedals off.

if you remove one or both wheels, pretty much any bike will fit in any car... unless it is a tandem!
