Yes! African-Americans have been members since the founding of the church. Jane Green and her family walked barefoot for over a hundred miles to join the main body of the church in the early 1800s, while the church was headquartered in Nauvoo, Illinois. There were three black members in the small, pioneering group that entered the Salt Lake valley on July 24, 1847.

Last year I spent two weeks in Ghana, where the church is growing rapidly. There are over twenty congregations in Accra alone, although the greatest concentration of church members is near Cape Coast. There are four temples in Africa.

Here in New Jersey there is a higher percentage of African-Americans than in the Rocky Mountain west, so there is a higher percentage of African American members. Our stake president is Ahmed Corbett, an African-American who owes his given name to his family’s former membership in the Black Muslims. (A Stake President is the leader of a group of about ten congregations, similar to a Catholic bishop leading a diocese.)

Yes, most definitely but African American Mormons are very few in number. I know of this African American family who are practicing Mormons, and they are the only African American family in their church.

Yes there are. The Church is a world-wide church and is open to everyone that wants to attend.

BTW - The term "Mormon" is a nickname commonly applied to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
