I work outdoors so I may be more aware of the pollution than other people who are in their offices all day. Some days are just horrible...you can see the smog..this horrible thick brown haze!!
I have definitely had days where I felt I could not get enough air into my lungs, and I have had my eyes burn, but never actually had any coughing or anything like that. There was a study done..saw it on TV once about people that grew up in the LA area, even people who have lived here long term, have a much smaller lung capacity then people who grew up in other parts of the country.

I grew up in a suburb of LA in the 60's and 70's and do recall one hot smoggy day at a football game. The sun was hazy bright and my eyes were burning so bad I could not watch the game. And I had this tickle in my throat whenever I took a deep breath that made me cough. No body else seemed bothered, but I wondered how those guys could play football! Anyway, that has not happened to me again. We have cleaned up air pollution a lot since then.

Live further East (Inland Empire) than LA and the air is pretty bad some days, really dark and hazy. Can't say that people in general cough any more than usual, but lots including myself have asthma. Eyes don't typically burn but feel like they dry out more frequently. Our health is affected by this stuff in the long run.

I've lived in L.A. all my life, and I have no problem with the smog in 21st century L.A..
It has improved a lot over the years. Back in the early '70s, we had horrible smog emergencies on a fairly regular basis - but fortunately, if the '60s Movement accomplished anything, it convinced people to start getting serious about air pollution. The air quality in L.A. is light years better than it was when I was younger. (And the sky here also looks a lot cleaner than it did on most days.)

Im from LA, the pollution is bad here but it does not bother me because we have great weather here. honestly, the know no one here really complain about the pollution here. Car Traffic is the real problem here. there are few people with asthma here and on rare ocassions eyes do tend to hurt a little.
