If people lived forever, would you be concerned about making your life 'meaningful'?

What would 'meaningful' be defined as? Remember, you have all of eternity on earth to do whatever you want. You can't kill people ('cause no-one dies), but you can do whatever else you want.

Don't think about how we'd age or whatever, just about the question. Or about eventualy getting to heaven or what-not.

Actualy, it kinda seems that without either death or God, we have problems here. I could go in circles about this forever.

What do you think?

If Adam and Eve had not eaten that fruit, we would not die, because we already had eternal life. No, we would not be concerned with making our lives meaningful then, because we didn't know good and evil then. Man being able to die, was part of Adam and Eve's punishment.
On the day that you do, you will surely die. This is what God had said before they even ate the fruit, and to show He always means what He says, the tree of eternal life was blocked off by an angel. Think about it. The Lord never said they couldn't eat from the tree of life before. That's because they already had eternal life.
Jesus was on the earth as God in the flesh, to show us how to get it back again. Even though it is as though you are dead, you can live forever in paradise.

You are speaking about life in the Garden of Eden before the fall of Man, or before the sin of Adam. That is how Man was created; immortal. Our souls remain immortal, but our bodies do not, because of sin. Prior to sin, there was no thought about life being meaningful, because life itself was meaningful. Adam and Eve lived in the will of God, and that was meaningful. Fellowship with God on the level that Adam and Eve enjoyed before the fall was meaningful.

For us, now, this is an unobtainable dream. But, hypothetically, I think the same things that are meaningful to us now would be meaningful even if we never had death to look forward to. Those things include love, fellowship with those we love and with God, doing things we are good at and that accomplish something...

Come to think of it, that sounds like heaven. In heaven, we will live forever. We will have meaningful lives in heaven if we believe in Jesus Christ.

On the other hand, some will live forever in hell, those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. Their lives will not be meaningful; their lives will consist only of suffering and torment. Not a pretty picture

ok, first of all, if we lived forever, I think we would constantly be making life better to fullfil our desires. We would constantly be trying to make our lives meaningful because we are here forever, and if our life never ends, then it sure as hell better mean something! Lot's of people (not all) who kill themself are people who's lives feel meaningless, so they cut there life short. If you cannot die the only thing to do is search for a meaning or reason why you are here. We would constantly be trying to make our lives better. Technology would probably advance faster because we would have people with thousands of years worth of knowledge. And without God you can still find meaning in life. God is used to explain the meaning of life... But really, life has no ultimate meaning! We all create our own meaning. We all decide what our life is worth. People who worship God make God the meaning of there life. But God is not the only reason for life. Only theists believe God is the meaning of life.

It shouldn't be death which motivates us to live more fruitful and happy lives; it should be life and the fact that living meaningful lives makes life just that-more meaningful. In fact, having eternal life would, at least for me, make me live life in the most meaningful ways possible because it would give me more time to do so and more time to live and experience the meaning that I would give to my own life. What I'm trying to say is that it is not about the length of one's life and making the most of it, but rather living one's life and experiencing the meaning that we give to each day, regardless of our impending deaths.

In a way, you never really die. Your physical body does, but not your soul. Your soul keeps on returning to clear past life issues in hopes of evolving into a higher level of soul. This is why it would still be important to keep on being a good person even if you never left the physical realm. You could strive reach enlightenment and then ascension.

No composed objects exist eternally.
What is meaningful is the spiritual life.
Man has to be awake to realize his true destiny.
The Holy Books give clear and most convincing explanations to all these matters. You can read them at the Gutenberg Project.

Probably not because we would have a lot of time on our hands since we would never die. We would just find other things to do and set the meaning of life for another day.
