Contacts that are only good for a month are disposable, depending on your point of reference. I gather you just don't want contacts that you throw away each day, which is perfectly fine. Most optometrist don't start people with those anyway, since they can be much more pricey. You will actually probably start off with contacts that are meant to be worn every day for 30 days.
Since this is your first time wearing contacts, they will probably not recommend any that are designed for a longer wear than a month, they are no longer the norm, especially for young people. Because you are just starting out, they will probably only get you a 6 month supply after you are done with your trial, just in case you change you mind.
Especially considering you play sports, you'll want to be sure that you learn how to take care of your lenses before you invest that kind of cash into them. Even the smallest mistakes can ruin the lenses, with a monthly contact, you're only out $20, with yearly or longer (a.k.a. conventional) lenses you could be out $200. Monthly are nice, especially with sports, because you can always have an extra box in case you lose, tear, or otherwise ruin one. It would be really rotten to miss a game because you lost a lense in the locker room. Sports also tend to be a little rougher on contacts, at least among my friends when I was in HS. They always complained about the sweat making their eyes sting more.
I completely understand not wanting dailies (from an environmental perspective), but not all contacts that aren't meant to be kept for several months or years are bad.
My mom used to have contacts that she was to wear for a year before getting new ones, and she constantly needed drops in her eyes and she complained about them quite frequently. She switched to the 3-week overnight lenses about a year ago and absolutely loves them.
My advice: Go with whatever your optometrist suggests (after you share your concerns) and once you have mastered the ownership of contacts, make an informed and experienced decision.
It is true, however, that just like shoes, there are contacts that work better and worse with everyone. Your optometrist knows your eyes best, and as long as you tell her about your lifestyle, she should be able to guide you to that perfect pair.

usually the doctor who'll perform your exam can tell you which contact lenses is right for you and your eyes. disposables are pretty convenient (wear it for 3 to 4 weeks at a time) then discard them. if you want the normal ones, those contacts are the ones u have to take out everyday...clean..and everything so it gets to be a hassle. ive been wearing contacts since high school..and i choose the disposables because i'm lazy to take them out everyday. if you want reasonably price contact lenses...buy them at costco. they're about $14.95 a box (contains 3 pairs) so if u decide disposable..that's 3 months worth.

Nice i got mine last month, well first youll take the vision test where you read whats on the wall (so yes your eyes will be dilated as well) then you put on a pair of contacts there and take them off ( so they know you wil do it right at home) and they let u try that pair out for about a week you come back and if you liked it you order some :)

Um...if your eye doctor says it's okay, and you can afford them, go for it.
I should warn you though that the longer you leave the contact in your eyes, the more likely you can get irritation or an infection, so just be careful.
And good luck with basketball!
