I am a semi pro landscape photograpgher, I know some pros who shoot wedings . You get what you pay for most of the time . Ask to see thier work and references of recent weedings they shot .
look at thier price list and see what they offer. maNany have packages of different servivces selcet only what yu need . make sure he uses more than digital a meduim format camera roll film Hassleblad mamiyas Rolies are popular . I use Mamiya 645 for landscapes the enlargements are amazing , not 35 MM and also offers digtal srvive the more you want the more it will cost . never ever hire a friend .
Yes iy is true that I own the rights to my work unless i sell the negatives and copyrights to them
It might be ok to get a university student but there could be a catch in that they might not be able to use the school lb for comercial work ,
I was not when I took Phot copurse but not as a major top fill a art requirerment .
So make sure who ever doesyour work either use a pro lab Which I do or has a dark roon set up. As a pro I do not like the idea of getting disposabel cameras on tables it is opk for a guest to brinmg one vbut that would not be very well recieved .
As isaid avoind freinds and familly memebers .if something s not right it gets unpleasant fast .
I have baterd to shoot a wedding . i got a Porsche that need was in good sape but had not been used in a while soi had to have some work done on it . Nice show off car . but this was a huge weeding and the folks werloaded and i needad a car as alli was driving at the time was my 1 ton dump .
so ther is a thought .
Best of luck

Generally, wedding photographers are REALLY expensive, and that aspect of your wedding is something that you can't really find at a "discount." The best way to go about getting your wedding pictures for cheaper is to just buy the negatives as opposed to asking your photographer to give you copies of the pictures. At that point you have every shot taken and you can print them at your own discretion by your personal photo place. Not only will it be cheaper, but now you have the rights to your negatives because they are bought. Did you know that if you wanted copies of your wedding pictures without buying the negatives, you would have to purchase them through the photographer ONLY? That's right, legally, the photographer has the rights to your photots, even far after the wedding.
If that's still too expensive, you could have a talented family member or friend help you out, and at your reception, you could always place disposable cameras at each table for guests to take candid pictures of the party.

I agree with Julie, hire a photography student for the traditional pictures. But then, instead of having a photographer at the reception, put a few disposable cameras on the tables for guests to take the pictures. My girlfriend did this and then just collected them at the end of the night. When she got the pictures back, she was surprised at what her family and friends had caught on film. The pictures were great and she got far more pictures than she could hope for without the hefty price.

Are there any colleges in your area that have fine arts programs? Call them and see if they have photography classes. Sometimes photo majors will do weddings, and they're usually inexpensive because they want to build their portfolio.

Do you have any colleges or universities in your area? If so, you could see if they have an art dept or any students that are majoring in photography. A lot of these students are very creative.

my friend found one for free by advertising on craigslist. there are photogs out there who want the exposure and experience so as long as you maybe allow them to keep copies or display the pics on their portfolios, you can get either very low prices or even for free.
good luck!
p/s you can ask to see their work and stuff, some of them are actually pretty good. my friend's pics turned out awesome!!
